Is he emotional about this topic too?

Why would you not give the school administrators the benefit of the doubt and assume that, just like every other school in America, the use of profanity by students is not allowed.

You use the adjective "disobedient" in describing the young lady. I do not think you understand the word

disobedient: refusing to follow the rule(s)

There was NO RULE for Ms Nootbaar to follow at the time she used the word hell in her speech, therefore she could not be "disobedient"

I am the product of private schools but that does not mean I am against public schools in this country.
Somerville, at this point I think he is just screwing with us just to see how long he can keep this thread going. Nobody can be this dense with all the evidence staring them in the face but continuing to stick to an undefendable position.

Because it is not a written rule and as such does not exist.

Try to prosecute somebody in California by saying that even though we don't have the written law, everybody else does, so this person must be convicted.

Also can you provdie proof that profanity is prohibited by, what did you say, every other school in America?

Obviously I'm not Somerville ... but you are absolutely correct about this.

I agree but you did post one wrong item - there is a rule against PROFANITY when a student is serving detention time but nowhere else (yeah, it's all caps in the handbook) but then we get into the definition of PROFANITY. Wanta bet that the word hell is said fortyleven times every Sunday in the Prague churches? So how does one word, which is not even on George Carlin's list become PROFANITY when preachers say it all the time?
“And I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in shewing that religion & Govt will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together.”
~ James Madison, letter to Edward Livingston, July 10, 1822

OK, but this girl was not in detention so it did not apply to her, so we are back to no rule broken.

I am sure she will get her diploma, as they have no legal standing. I am just amazed that this is her payoff from the school for getting a 4.0 average for the 3 years she was there.

I can imagine how they treat a trouble maker.

The rules contained in the manual are never said to be exhaustive. The fax is that every school in the country disallows their students from using profanity. It is absurd and ignorant to suggest that a school does not have such a rule just because it is not listed in a booklet that was never intended as an exhaustive list of rules.

I am extremely dismayed that anybody would make such a stupid argument as this.

I'm extremely dismayed that anyone rational in 2012 America would think that "hell" qualifies as profanity.

Oh wait, forgot who I was talking to.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.
