Automaker Fisker recalls some 2,400 Karmas for cooling fan issue

'Fisker Automotive, a green car company that received funding from the U.S. government, is recalling about 2,400 Karma plug-in hybrids to repair a faulty cooling fan unit that was the cause of a vehicle fire in Woodside, California last week.

The Anaheim, California-based automaker, founded in 2007, said the August 10 fire began in front of the left wheel, where the low temperature cooling fan is located. An "internal fault" caused the sealed unit to fail, starting a slow burning fire, Fisker said in a statement on Saturday....

...Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Energy denied Fisker access to more than half of a $529-million government loan awarded in 2009 due to delays in the Karma launch.'

    Well that's big news.
"The necessaries of life occasion the great expense of the poor. They find it difficult to get food, and the greater part of their little revenue is spent in getting it. The luxuries and vanities of life occasion the principal expense of the rich, and a magnificent house embellishes and sets off to the best advantage all the other luxuries and vanities which they possess. ... It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion."

It just keeps rainin' on Obama's parade. Let's see if Romney uses that to some small advantage. That's one hot car, though.

But for over $100K, I guess it should be.

What the heck good does it do to invest in a company that makes a car no one can afford?

Seems like it got $260M from the government; now it's looking for another $150M to stay afloat. Wanna' bet it's on the chopping block right after the election? Or will we give them the other half of the money that was set aside for them that's now on hold?

Not only the Feds, but the idiot Gov of DE dumped millions of DE tax dollars into Fisker because they were going to build cars at the empty GM plant in Newark, DE and hire HUNDREDS OF OUT OF WORK AUTOWORKERS. Right. The plant is still empty, DE taxpayers are footing the bill for utilities and upkeep ... and the 'out of work autoworkers' in Finland have the jobs.

Fisker will be the next Delorean. They'll make crappy, expensive cars for a couple years, and then no one will ever hear from them again. It would be no great shame if every single one of those POS Karmas burnt to the ground.

I really hope they don't get their additional funding, for a number of personal and political reasons.

Green cars (actually any cars) that cost $100K have a small market and are a foolish product for our gov't to invest in. The party of the "little guy" investing in toys for the rich and famous, using borrowed money and backed by the taxpayers, is insane. Safety recalls are no big deal, since only experience (over time) can show these types of problems. Like all hybrid technology, it is inefficient in either mode; in the electric mode (about the first 32 miles) it must carry the added dead cargo weight/bulk of the IC engine and the fossil fuel source and in the IC mode (all travel beyond 32 miles, and at only 20mpg) it must carry the added dead weight/bulk of the electric power plant and batteries. Since the basic technology is not new, the mileage is poor and the price is high - just what exactly is so good about these cars?

What does this have to do with Obama? That's like saying the Toyota recalls hurt the GOP because the GOP supports drilling more oil.

No, the Obama Administration gave a $560M line of credit to this company. They've used $260M of it and are looking for another $150M more. Fortunately, the government has now pulled the plug on that line of credit (for the near term). The recall isn't that significant. Car companies do that all the time. But the fact that they're still in trouble? The fact that the line-of-credit was given to a company that builds $100K+ cars? I'd like to see Obama have to justify that decision in the public eye.
