This has happened before in Detroit...judge ruled you cant stop delivery in just one neighborhood you have to stop delivery entirely...thats what this chain has done...What a shame it has to come to this...

Has it come to this? Yes it has, according to Joan McKenna, whose son Tim McKenna, 19, was shot while delivering pizza in Detroit. In the wake of the shooting, a Jets Pizza franchise in Dearborn ruled it will no longer deliver to Detroit after dark. Before the shooting, they sent two drivers to every nighttime Detroit delivery, one of whom was armed, Joan McKenna said.
“They usually send somebody with a guy … who carries a gun,” she said. “Usually they have two go into Detroit after dark, if they have a delivery … One guy has a legal, he can carry a gun. That night, Timmy was the only one left, they had this one run to do, he said ‘yeah, I’ll do it.’ He’s a kid, he doesn’t think anything’s going to happen to him.”

Hopefully that pizza chain fights that idiotic ruling. A delivery places should be free to refuse to deliver to any area they feel is dangerous to their employees while still being able to deliver to areas they feel are safe for their employees.

That was lost already unfortunately...it would have to go to SCOTUS and I doubt they would take it

Re: Pizza Franchise Creates ‘Not After Dark’ Delivery Rule In Detroit After Driver Sh

I read the article but it didn't state how the issue got to court for a judge to rule the business can't set their own policy about when and where they can conduct their practices. The Detroit police not following up on attempted murder is absolutely insane. one must be nuts to ever venture into that hell hole.

Re: Pizza Franchise Creates ‘Not After Dark’ Delivery Rule In Detroit After Driver Sh

I think a good work around would be to allow individual store managers to determine delivery policy. That way, locations in high crime neighborhoods could cease delivery after dark, but those in better neighborhoods could continue to deliver. It's not a chain-wide policy...sort of like leaving the issue up to the states...

That ruling is several years ago...when private pizza business collectively refused to deliver to a certain detroit neighborhood....first of all the delivery guys wouldnt go there...they were beaten, robbed and killed constantly....when they did that...cab drivers also said they were refusing to service that neighborhood...ACLU took it to court and the judge ruled that you cant single out a single specific neighborhood...I dont remember if it was appealed to a higher court or not...

The detroit police debt has been cut so deeply of personel and have had so much taken off them...they cannot function...just like the camden NJ police dept.....
You cant have it both ways...you cant cut your Police Dept to where they cant protect the citizens then blame them when something happens....

LEOs have no obligation/duty to protect citizens. That's already been adjudicated. ;;)

You know the old saying...."When seconds count, the coppers are minutes away." Cops can't protect pizza delivery drivers. What an idiotic ruling, by the way.

Unfortunately your right...we cannot protect delivery drivers....what I meant was a police presence in that neighborhood and cleaning it up....at the least minimizing the problem...that cant happen with a police force that has been devestated

Obviously GOP govs dont get it...when you cut your police forces below the bone and take from them and depress them...it has a chain reaction that hurts your tax base and snowballs the problem...

Pizza delivery areas rarely overlap so as long as only that pizza store's delivery area is effected then it is essentially the same thing (a very local ban). It is not as though all of MI (or even all of Detroit) is experiencing this no pizza delvery after dark. ;-)

Preventing delivery of Jets Pizza to these residents needs to be classified as a public service in the national interest. It is the kind of chain pizza that is hard to differentiate from the cardboard box that it comes in.

The ACLU is despicable for doing that, and they have blood on their hands if more were killed as a result.

I lived in Detroit. Below 8 MIle Road, the real inner city, and I still have relatives that live there, but they got out of the old neighborhood, with good reason.

When I visit, there is no way in hell, I'd go back to the old neighborhood in broad daylight. Unless I had a CWP, because it is very, very dangerous. So when I read the OP, I wasn't surprised at all.

Anyone who wants delivery service to continue, should have to do the delivering, IMO.

Re: Pizza Franchise Creates ‘Not After Dark’ Delivery Rule In Detroit After Driver Sh

My current understanding is that a business can refuse service to anyone as long as it's not because that person belongs to one of the legally protected groups.

I don't see anything in the article which references courts or rulings or any similar such.
Where did the idea come from that there was some court ruling in re this news article?

It's getting to the point that it's becoming illegal to protect yourself from harmful areas or offend people. Frankly I say to people if you want the same service as the better neighborhoods get rid of the scum in yours. People talk, so when you know the people responsible for 99% of your neighborhood's problems for god's sake sell them the **** out.

The City of Chicago has very strict laws on the city taxi cabs. Taxi drivers are scared to go into some neighborhoods in the city; but refuse to go? You'll lose your medallion.
