That's a tiny number given the size of the US. There are thousands of gun deaths every year in the US, the vast majority just aren't reported outside the local area. I doubt there has been any significant change in recent weeks, theis kind of incident will just be getting a little more media attention and you're a little more aware of them.
Keep that supply of assault rifles coming, boys and girls!
Assault rifles should be outlawed.
Who is it that you want to shoot?
Assault rifles are for killing people in large numbers, Tigger. They are not for hunting or defending your home.
My first guess would be drug related. Being that you are from the same general area as me I don't have to tell you about the NOLA drug/violence problem. Great city, crappy criminal underground.I'm very interested to find out why the gunman initially shot the off duty sheriff's deputy.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the slain deputies. No man is greater than he who gives his life to protect others.
Seriously? there are on the order of 44 people (16,000 a year) killed by criminals using firearms a DAY. Three times that number daily by criminals using means other than firearms. Those incidents are completely ignored, unless there is some sort of shock value. On the same day the Sikh temple was targeted a woman shot 7 people in Detroit because she was pissed over a casino argument.
It will be helpful to actual see what happened here. I would bet that a wanted individual opened fire because he knew he was about to go to jail, then they opened fire again at the trailer they were at for the same reason.
US Violent Crime Down for 5th Straight Year
Jun 11, 2012 6:02pm EDT
(Reuters) - Violent crime in the United States fell for a fifth straight year in 2011 and the number of murders dropped to the lowest in more than four decades, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Monday.
U.S. violent crime rates, which include murder, rape, robbery and assault, dropped 4 percent in 2011 from the previous year, according to the FBI's Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report.
In addition, property crime, covering burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft, edged down by just 0.8 percent, the smallest decrease in three years. Nevertheless, that marked the ninth consecutive annual drop in property crimes.
Both violent crime and property crime peaked in the early 1990s, FBI records show. U.S. property crime has fallen steadily since then, falling by 30.6 percent from its 1991 peak through last year, while violent crime has dropped by 38 percent from its 1992 high.
Violent crime overall across the board is down. it has nothing to do with the ineffectual 'assault rifle ban'. And why cant anyone EVER define what they mean when they say 'assault rifle'?The FBI doesn't agree with your "data"
Crime in the US 2010 report
Homicide Data Table 8 shows 8,775 murders by firearm in 2010
The most recent data available for suicide by firearm is from 2005 which shows 17,002. The same year's accidental/unintentional death by firearm number was 789
Fatal Injury Data
Here's more info showing that some folks will post anything and claim it is a fact even when reality says otherwise

Does not compute - First, post totally fictitious information, when said 'data' is shown to be fake, post a totally unrelated comment. Does not work for me.Originally Posted by VanceMack

But you DID note that in 2005 there was 17000 deaths. Im VERY happy to see violent crime overall going down. Now...using your updated figure there are STILL 24 deaths by criminals using firearms every day. EVERY day. So the occasional spree killing IS sad...tragic...but...why so silent about the DAILY death and violence in the country? Why is there only an outcry occasionally? Why wasnt this woman...http://www.examiner.com/article/ang...-riverfront-following-moonlight-cruise-1...as much a story as the tragic shootings at the Sikh temple? Where is thy continued outrage?in reply we get this
Which has zero relationship to the post which stated

And what IS an 'assault rifle'?

The 2005 death number was for SUICIDES - please take the time to read all of the words before replying.
NO! There are not "24 deaths by criminals" every day. The majority of homicides are committed by persons acquainted or related to the victim. Technically the murderer is, once convicted, a criminal - that does not mean they would fit the commonly accepted definition of "criminal" which means a person who has committed numerous crimes and perhaps even makes a living from the proceeds of crimes. In 2009, 24.2 percent of victims were slain by family members; 53.8 percent were killed by someone they knew (acquaintance, neighbour, friend, boyfriend, etc.).
Your Examiner link gives me the following
An "assault rifle" will at some point be defined by legislation - that the NRA will scream about even though the majority of Americans will approve of the bill.
the main reason to own assault rifles (the real ones) is to use them against evil. Evil being criminals or control freaks who want to strip people of their rights.
:the acquainted bit includes pushers killing rival pushers, gang bangers killing rival gang bangers
80% of the victims have records.
the main reason why you lefties want to restrict guns is to hassle people whose politics you find distasteful
Provide proof for the following claim 80% of the victims have records.
Provide specifics, give us some valid links or actual printed matter that would in any manner support this statement of yours.
What are you counting as "records"? Traffic tickets, public drunkeness, loitering ... ? What level of criminality are we looking at in those "records"?
The main reason us lefties want to restrict guns is to reduce the number of unnecessary deaths in this country.
1) GIYLF
2) You have not earned the right or ability to demand I do anything. You are a newbie whose posts do not demonstrate much reasoning.
no study has ever indicated that what you want to do will make us safer. The studies show that gun control schemes people like you crave tend to impact ONLY HONEST PEOPLE
criminals are already banned from even handling firearms.
I believe it was John Lott that started a study to prove the positive effects of gun control and then changed his position to the pro firearms side. Could be wrong on that but the trend appears to be open minded gun ban advocates tend to swing to the pro gun side.1) GIYLF

you cannot buy or own an assault rifle made after may 19, 1986 unless you are a title II manufacturer or a class III dealer with a police request for product samples
ignorance of gun laws is a standard feature of hoplophobes
if that is true why are civilian police departments issued them
civilian police have no more right or power to kill people than you or I do
so what that means is that police are issued such weapons for SELF DEFENSE AGAINST CRIMINALS
which is the same legitimate purpose other civilians ought to be able to own them for
:lamo Ah...so they arent 'criminals' until they are caught and convicted. THAT is what you build an argument on. and...so...wait...you are calling for a ban...of a weapon you cant even identify? You are just succumbing to simple minded rhetoric? We gots ta ban SOMEPIN!!!!!The 2005 death number was for SUICIDES - please take the time to read all of the words before replying.

Oh...WOW...THAT might not stand up to basic scrutiny. Want to bet?Police are trained and disciplined and accountable for evey bullet they fire..
Oh...WOW...THAT might not stand up to basic scrutiny. Want to bet?
And...can YOU define the 'assault rifle' you want to see banned? We arent having much luck with that...
Police are trained and disciplined and accountable for evey bullet they fire..
and yet...we regularly read accounts of people gunned down for carrying nothing more lethal than a wallet. As for the 'accountable for every bullet'....really? GoogleThere are bad cops, but they do make a serious effort to train and discipline officers who are NOT mental cases.
Why would I know the laws on assault rifles? In my family were had shotguns, 45s and 38..
