Hate to break it to you champ, but Governments are supposed to abide by the law too. Things like Wikileaks help to remind them of that.

So, you think that having such whistle blowers that could help prevent putting soldiers in harms way in the first place, are a risk to soldiers?

We NEED whistle blowers, folks. It's not like the wikileaks folks were selling their info to the highest bidder...so they were not in it for the espionage. They were in it for government oversight, and if you've glanced at the news at all in the last...7 years, you'll realize just how much our government needs oversight. It's nothing but scandal after scandal after freaking scandal. We actually have a topic page called Scandal Du Jour, on this forum. And if you think for a minute that our elected and appointed reps are above sending soldiers into harms way based on lies, obfuscations, and deceits, then we are just not going to see eye to eye, are we?

SO anyway, this story happens to be false, Equador has not made a decision yet. Decision on Assange Asylum Thursday: Ecuador Official - Yahoo! News

Patino said that Ecuador will announce its decision on Assange's asylum request Thursday morning. Some media outlets reported yesterday that Assange had been granted asylum, but Ecuadorean officials said at the time that no decision had been reached.
    This part is interesting though:

"Today we've received a threat by the United Kingdom, a clear and written threat that they could storm our embassy in London if Ecuador refuses to hand in Julian Assange," said Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino.
That is almost certainly made up since Britain will just intercept him when being transported, but in a way it would not bother me if it was true. Letting other countries harbor people accused of criminal behavior in their embassy is not a good plan.

    So what did Assange do?

    4 allegations in Sweden: http://www.judiciary.gov.uk/Resource...e-judgment.pdf

1.On 13th – 14th August 2010, in the home of the injured party [name given] in Stockholm, Assange, by using violence, forced the injured party to endure his restricting her freedom of movement. The violence consisted in a firm hold of the injured party’s arms and a forceful spreading of her legs whilst lying on top of her and with his body weight preventing her from moving or shifting.
2.On 13th – 14th August 2010, in the home of the injured party [name given] in Stockholm, Assange deliberately molested the injured party by acting in a manner designed to violate her sexual integrity. Assange, who was aware that it was the expressed wish of the injured party and a prerequisite of sexual intercourse that a condom be used, consummated unprotected sexual intercourse with her without her knowledge.
3.On 18th August 2010 or on any of the days before or after that date, in the home of the injured party [name given] in Stockholm, Assange deliberately molested the injured party by acting in a manner designed to violate her sexual integrity i.e. lying next to her and pressing his naked, erect penis to her body.
4.On 17th August 2010, in the home of the injured party [name given] in Enkoping, Assange deliberately consummated sexual intercourse with her by improperly exploiting that she, due to sleep, was in a helpless state.
It is an aggravating circumstance that Assange, who was aware that it was the expressed wish of the injured party and a prerequisite of sexual intercourse that a condom be used, still consummated unprotected sexual intercourse with her. The sexual act was designed to violate the injured party’s sexual integrity.

Great move for freedom and transparency on Ecuadors part! Now hopefully Assange can find some safe way to get from GB and to Ecuador!
Sounds pretty suicidal to admit you're gonna give someone like Assange asylum. I would expect any country that did to only do so in secrecy.

Something's amiss here. Correa can't be that dumb.

Just to be clear, there is a procedure in the US military for whistle blowers that provides protection. Wikileaks is not a whistleblower however, they are simply a website.

No troop positions were endangered. No nation's security was endangered. But overconfident governments discovered that they cannot act with impunity. How is this a bad thing? Why does a socialist have to defend checks on government power by a private citizen to conservatives?
Because rush limbaugh told conservatives that he's a terrorist.

(but fox news is still working hard to find a pic of Assange wearing a turban to make its case to its loyal viewers )

Well, in one count that is questionable, and in the other three, illegal. See, most countries have these things called laws. When you don't follow those laws, you are subject to punishment. That is a big part of what we call civilization.
