Murfreesboro church's crosses offer message to Muslims

Islamic Center of Murfreesboro members will pass a field lined with 13 white crosses in front of Grace Baptist Church on Bradyville Pike on the way to their new mosque once it opens.
“It was more or less to make a statement to the Muslims about how we felt about our religion, our Christianity,” said Mack Richards, aMiddle Tennessee Baptist Church member who built the crosses at the request of Grace Baptist member and friend Bobby Francis. “We wanted them to see the crosses and know how we felt about things.”
“That’s what the church voted to do,” said Francis, a member of Grace Baptist since the 1970s when it was on Dill Lane.

Grace Baptist moved into its current home of about 6,000 square feet two years ago and is currently served by interim pastor Dan Watts.

The mosque next door has been the subject of intense scrutiny and debate in the past two years, including vandalism to its sign, abomb threat, arson to construction equipmenton site and a lawsuit to block its construction. Plaintiffs unsuccessfully argued in court that Islam is not a religion but won one battle in which the judge agreed that insufficient notice was provided by the county government concerning a meeting over the mosque’s site plans, which is under appeal.

This is the net result of Bachmann-type ignorance. People get their heads filled with false ideas about Islam and Muslims and then they engage in this type of dickishness--making people feel unwelcome etc.

Freedom of Religion applies to all faiths.

Its almost like sending someone to jail over code violations.

I don't understand what the problem is. Why are people bothered by a Christian church putting crosses on their front lawn?

You're saying that a church may not place crosses in its yard? That seems odd.

Well, people aren't dumb. They know they can hide their intentions behind freedom of religion and no one can say boo.

But I'm not putting it past this church to make it a backhanded display of implied Christian superiority.

Just another reason why organized religion is such a bunch of BS.

As if just attending the church wasn't enough. These people are just dickheads who get a smug sense of authority from their interpretation of Scriputre.

**** these losers.

I am Jewish. I hate having to look at crosses. They make me think of progroms, and I'm not kidding. Therefore...... what?

The intent is obvious by all the context outlined in the story.

Nothing is wrong with a Christian Church putting up a cross. In fact, I resent atheists activists who go around trying to get every religious symbol off public property.

But in this case, people (who call themselves Christian) are going out of their way to make life difficult for Muslims in their community. This type of behavior is not Christian.

Therefore...

1. This church, who voted to post up a bunch of crosses for the members of the mosque to see, are douchebags. Just because what they did is legal doesn't make it right or good.

2. On a wider scale, organized religion is a way for all manner of ****ty people to justify their ****ty behavior.

Honestly, I wish I could get crosses removed from churches generally. Why should I be driving down the street, minding my own business, and be forced to suffer the stress of looking at them?

As much of a dick reason why the Church put them up, it is still on their property so just ignore it and let them do their childish behavior.

It astonishes me, because it is always the same people who get upset about the "Happy Holidasy" stuff and argue that atheists are encroaching on their lives. Hypocrisy at its finest.

If you're being honest, then you know exactly why. The First Amendment.

If you're being sarcastic, I'm clearly not saying they aren't allowed to put what they want on their property, within the laws of city.

Either way, was that comment really necessary? What does it contribute to the discussion?

I hope the muslims who have to put up with these garbage Christians can just ignore them and go about their lives.

Meanwhile, us real Christians will shame and embarrass these dick-Christians.

Well you may not like to look at fire hydrants, trees and blue cars either, that doesn't mean that anyone is going to remove them.

Seek psychiatric assistance.

As much as I hate crosses, and I'm not joking about that, I'm offended by the notion that a church ought not place crosses on its property to avoid offending either me or passing Muslims.

Except no one is saying that.

What is it with so many of our resident right-wingers and this knee-jerk reaction? I, as someone to the left of Ghengis Kahn, disagree with something, and the immediate assumption by you is that I want jack-booted government thugs to kick the front door down and remove the offending item.

What in God's name are you basing this idea on? Name one post on this thread that suggested that a law should be passed or government action initiated to stop the church from doing this. Name one, please. Just one.

All we are saying is that the the douchebags of this stupid church are clearly trying to rile up their Muslim neighbors and that they suck for doing that.

Where do you come off claiming that a church which places crosses on its own property is "clearly trying to rile up their Muslim neighbors"? What is it about liberalism which brings you to a judgment like that?

Oh, and where do you come up with the claim that you're being accused of wanting to ban the crosses? Where did I say that? What I said was, "I'm offended by the notion that a church ought not place crosses on its property to avoid offending either me or passing Muslims."

Why are you getting upset? This is a typical game in political debates. It's subtle attempt to change the topic by stating something sensational that didn't happen. It happens all the time.

Because I've got nothing to do all day, so I feel like getting into a pointless argument with a hack.

Oh those poor, poor muslims. Perhaps you might tell me where this particular outrage ranks among the great clashes in religious history. They have to drive by crosses. Oh the horror.
