Vacant Detroit Becomes the Dumping Ground for the Dead

    News from The Associated Press

Abandoned and neglected parts of Detroit are quickly becoming dumping grounds for the bodies of murder victims. And authorities acknowledge there's little they can do.
What is responsible for Detroit's terrible decline?

My first instinct is its corrupt gov't. Where I live, if you even let your grass grow too tall you are cited and fined. These properties are owned by someone, either condemn them and tear them down or force the owners to maintain them. Once a structure is vacated it takes little time for it to be stripped of valuable metal (wiring, ducts and pipes) at which point it should be bulldozed and removed as a public hazzard. Leaving gutted shells of structures in hopes of a miraculous recovery is insane and leads to this "dumping" and their conversion to criminal campgrounds/hideouts.

That is a question that should have been asked 30 years ago. Being from Detroit and left because of their economic problems I believe the decline was caused by people suddenly having no work, expecting government aid and getting little, and repeated failed leadership in the city who thought the name Detroit would bring businesses in and when the ones that were there left they did little or nothing to bring in new jobs for the longest time. And when they finally did they brought in casinos as the solution. If there is one thing a city full of poor, angry, drug addicted, unemployed people need it is gambling.

trickle down economics / wealth consolidation, outsourcing to global labor markets, and technological innovation that is moving several sectors towards a post-labor economy.

    No mention of Union gouging?

Lots of what used to be produced there is no longer produced there. The Mid West around the Great Lakes really suffered downturns for some time now and the jobs that used to make Ohio and Detroit such industrious places are gone. I mean, there's lots of reasons as well because this isn't a one issue effect; but I do think that's one of the major causes.

In the end, Detroit has become unable to support its population due to the population crash. As such, much of it should be bulldozed over and reverted to farm land. No point trying to support the infrastructure or just allow it to decay into ruin.

The most direct speculation would be that someone is going into these buildings and killing people that are in them.

The next most direct speculation would be that people are taking the time to traffic dead bodies to these areas.

Good point. The email with photos comparing Hiroshima and Detroit in 1946, and again today, is very instructive.

We went through this several months ago. The right wingers wanted to blame unions. Why pass up your favorite whipping boy?

The actual answer is in the ten year census figures which I reproduced on this site along with expert analysis of the loss of manufacturing jobs and the tax base that went with it.

Racism played a huge role as the African-american population doubled after 1950 while the white population declined over 80%.

In this thread I put forth lots of information --- look in the pages in the 50's and 60's and look for my posts.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers
