A U.N. treaty to regulate the multibillion-dollar global arms trade will have to wait after member states failed to reach an agreement, and some diplomats and supporters blamed the United States for the unravelling of the month-long negotiating conference.
“This was stunning cowardice by the Obama administration, which at the last minute did an about-face and scuttled progress toward a global arms treaty, just as it reached the finish line,” said Suzanne Nossel, executive director of Amnesty International USA. “It’s a staggering abdication of leadership by the world’s largest exporter of conventional weapons to pull the plug on the talks just as they were nearing an historic breakthrough.”
A Western diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, also blamed the U.S., saying “they derailed the process”, adding that nothing will happen to revive negotiations until after the U.S. presidential election in November.

The draft treaty would require all countries to establish national regulations to control the transfer of conventional arms and to regulate arms brokers. It would prohibit states that ratify the treaty from transferring conventional weapons if they would violate arms embargoes or if they would promote acts of genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes.
In considering whether to authorise the export of arms, the draft says a country must evaluate whether the weapon would be used to violate international human rights or humanitarian laws or be used by terrorists, organized crime or for corrupt practices.
Many countries, including the U.S., control arms exports but there has never been an international treaty regulating the estimated $60-billion global arms trade. For more than a decade, activists and some governments have been pushing for international rules to try to keep illicit weapons out of the hands of terrorists, insurgent fighters and organized crime.

It's our last great export, other than movies. Gotta keep those guns and bullets flowing. Otherwise, my state at the very least, would have some AWFULLY tough times ahead of it. Lotta good old boys in unions raking in the big bucks for making various arms.

It's a little late in the game anyway. I can't even imagine how many weapons are out there floating around the world. Its our major export and a lot of other countries also.

Why so devastated? Down goes another treaty that the US would be the only one expected to comply with. They put Iran on the top tier treaty planning committee for crying out loud.

More UN BS to define insane Jihadis as "freedom fighters" and the rest of the world as "freedom oppressors" and fine them for arming any resistance efforts to foreign dictators. Why we continue to fund this UN madness, much less pretend it has ANY power is beyond me.

I guess Eric Holder talked Obama out of it, fast and furiously. :lamo

The dollar will crash faster without it.

What?

and the rest of the world as "freedom oppressors"
What?

Yea because we all know strong rules that protect human rights, and preventing arms from being sent to those would would use these arms to violate those rights are really a bad thing, right?

Of course the U.S. and Russia are why it failed at least they agree on something. You can't stop exporting to countries that abuse human rights and all that stuff, can't do that can they.

our main exports should be food, health care and energy technology innovation, and humanitarian aid. if we come bringing food and help, we'll need to spend a lot less on guns and war.

Bullets don't spoil, are cheap to make, and easy to ship. Food is none of those things. Also, the people with all the money(potential customers) don't WANT the things you listed...they want weapons.

What are you ****ing talking about? I've seen some people twist words before but this is pure bull**** on your part, there is nothing not a god damn thing in this treaty to suggest Jihadists are freedom fighters and whatever dribble you're spewing. How the hell can you perceive the world like this? Do you just make **** up instead of actual reading, educating yourself? Seriously dude, this a perfect example of everything wrong with this country.

I can stand reasonable disagreement, but this is just making **** up you should be ashamed of yourself for having to argue like this and spreading these kind of outright lies.

You want to put Americans out of work by restricting our gun exports?

If your country's economy relies on selling arms and ammunition to human rights abusers there is something wrong.

If your country's economy relies on selling arms and ammunition to human rights abusers there is something wrong.

SO, what country's economy relies on selling arms and ammo to human rights abusers?

That is what people are making sound like. Not being able to sell arms to human rights abusers will destroy the economy.
