The former head of the United Nations observer mission in Syria has said that President Bashar al-Assad's fall is "only a matter of time", but that his exit may not end the conflict.
"Sooner or later, the regime will fall," Robert Mood, the Norwegian general, said on Friday. "The spiral of violence, the lack of proportion in the regime's reactions, its incapacity to protect the civilian population, mean that the regime's days are numbered, but will it fall in a week or in a year? That is a question I do not dare answer."

"Many think that if Bashar al-Assad falls or that if he is given an honourable exit ... the problem will be solved. That is an over-simplification one should be wary of," Mood told a news conference. "The situation could even get worse."

But Mood also said "it is impossible to imagine a future Syria with the current power holders still in place".

"Every time there are 15 people killed in a village, 500 additional sympathisers are mobilised, roughly 100 of whom are
fighters," Mood said.

Mood has been replaced by Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye, a Senegalese military officer who is taking over a drastically reduced mission of just 150 observers. Gaye's mission has a mandate of only 30 days.

With the amount of defections and the rebels gaining ground a support Assad will fall. Its only a matter of time before the Syrian people will decide their future.

I don't think anyone doubts that Assad's regime will fall. How quickly is the question. The sooner the better, if you ask me.

The sooner the better indeed. The sooner it happens, more lives will be saved.

I also hope that his regime falls soon, but also that there would be justice for those who has slaughtered.

Something to keep in mind, these rebel's who are fighting Assad are flying the Al quada flag, and planting bomb's and killing civillan's in the same fashion as what happened in Iraq.

All small, and very few incidents.

No. We shouldn't fool ourselves into thinking that anyone except Islamists will replace Assad. It will just be MB/AQ affiliated Islamists instead of Hezbollah affiliated Islamists.

Assad will still be in power next year.

I certainly hope this is the case, and there is an ample amount of circumstantial and testimonial evidence to indicate the regime is suffering extraordinary internal stress. I believe it is a travesty that the US and its allies have not done more to assist the FSA and SNC. The hesitance in even deploying intelligence assets is an extraordinary omission, and is a dark mark on the Obama administrations record. My only fear is that the rebels have moved to aggressively too quickly, aiming for a spectacular media filled campaign, in lieu of military support. It would not be the first time an insurgent group was destroyed because it occupied fixed positions and suffered irreplaceable casualties. That being said, I think the FSA can survive a defeat at Aleppo provided the battle is sufficiently bloody and exhausting for the regime, and I do believe in the end Assad is doomed.

Same thing as Libya, the crimes of the rebels are hushed up and every single unfounded allegation of those by the Syrian army are paraded around as the truth.

That's why we should install a puppet dictator.
