regardless of whether or not he is insane?

we punish people for choosing to commit crimes, that they understood were crimes and understood were wrong.

if he didn't know it was a crime and didn't know it was wrong, he needs mental help...not the gas chamber.

I have already answered this. Yes. The answer will be yes everytime. You can stop asking. You can read the last time I answered. It will be there.

Please. Get real. This guy was a PHD "student", he fully understood that killing random people was wrong. I am sick of the constant liberal cry that all personal "mistakes" are caused by some mysterious outside force (root cause?) that can only be "fixed" by a magical gov't program after massive spending to determine just how much LATER. I am against using the DP in this case, as its endless tax funded appeals are wasteful, simply issue 12 (or more) consecutive life sentences and put this moron in regular prison ASAP, thus the judical problem is solved at minimal costs. It is likely that his fate will be just like that of Jeffry Dhalmer, once he gets tired of "protective custody", he will get his "just us" in prison.

It isn't "blood-lust" to meet out punishment that fits the crime. Killing a man who killed and/or shot 70 people is what I would say is just punishment.

    Oh, man.

I've spent a lot of time training how to disarm a man with a gun, unarmed. I teach it. I'm very good at it. People go "Ooh!" and "Holy crap!" when they see how fast I can take a gun from someone in class. You can probably count of the fingers of one hand how many people out of a given million have trained this as much or more than I have.

I don't ever want to have to do it for real. It is extremely damn dangerous and if it doesn't work you're screwed. I'd much rather shoot a criminal with a gun than grapple with him.

We can't really do that, because we can't predict with certainty who will just snap and lose their grasp on reality. It's not as if this guy was some homeless babbling idiot, or drug-crazed maniac. He was, as of recently, a normal to high-functioning member of society, and obviously not stupid.
