As of July, nearly 18,000 cases have been reported, more than twice as many as at this time last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. At this pace, the number of whooping cough cases will surpass every year since 1959.

it has made me sad to follow the resurgence of this previously rare disease. unvaccinated children are eight times more likely to contract pertussis.

Un-vaccinated children no doubt play a part, but it's not just them. Vaccinated children are also catching it; the vaccine may not be effective enough. Booster shots are a good idea for children and adults likely to be exposed.

JENNY MCCARTHY BODY COUNT

I also blame trail lawyers who want to make the billions from suing vaccine manufacturers.

much of it is the legacy of Wakefield and his fraudulent study. it encouraged an entire network of well-meaning "natural" blogs which scare parents away from vaccinating their small children for fear of autism. though the claim has been thoroughly debunked and Lancet has retracted his initial study, the damage is difficult to reverse. it's important to remember that high infant mortality, pertussis, and an average human lifespan of 40 years are all "natural," as well.

Dear anti-science morons:

You are literally killing people.

The vaccine that was replaced was called DPT, because it was meant to vaccinate against Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (whooping cough). Cases of death did occur due to the DPT vaccination, which forced the production of the current vaccine. The current vaccine is not as effective, but the risk of harmful side effect is drastically lower. Adding to that is the fact that bacteria mutates to increase its chance of survival, and that the population is significantly higher than it was in 1959, which means more people are in in contact with others more frequently.

It's not "anti-science morons", it's the circumstances involved.

True, but vaccinations are not always 100% effective. That is another reason why herd immunity is so important.

People are refusing to take vaccinations due to fears of nonexistent side effects.

As background, I'm fully for vaccination. However, if you're that one out of a million unlucky bio-lottery winner, death can be the result. All vaccinations, all medications have side effects that can be intensely negative for a small percentage of users. But even if the chance is exceedingly small, one in a million - if it ends up being your child, well, that's the thought that motivates these folks to forgo vaccination.

The percentages are not typically that small.

Its just nature trying to solve the 99% problem.

It's possible there may be problems with long-term effectiveness of the current formulation, but some protection from a potentially lethal infection is still better than none.
