Also worth noting is that Canada scores higher than we do on the economic freedom index, and has been slashing their corporate income tax down to less than half of ours.

While Americans might enjoy throwing politically-charged barbs at their neighbors to the north, Canadians now have at least one reason to be smug.

For the first time in recent history, the average Canadian is richer than the average American, according to a report cited in Toronto's Globe and Mail.

And not just by a little. Currently, the average Canadian household is more than $40,000 richer than the average American household. The net worth of the average Canadian household in 2011 was $363,202, compared to around $320,000 for Americans...

To add insult to injury, not only are Canadians comparatively better-off than Americans, they're also more likely to be employed. The unemployment rate is 7.2 percent—and dropping—in Canada, while the U.S. is stuck with a stubbornly high rate of 8.2 percent.

Besides a strengthening currency and a better labor market, experts credit the particularly savage fallout from the financial crisis on the U.S. economy and housing market, which torpedoed home values and gutted household wealth. According to the report, real estate held by Canadians is worth more than $140,000 more on average and they have almost four times as much equity in their real estate investments...

Gosh, I wonder how they got better than they used to be.

Of course they do. Decades of Republocrat rule has created the new aristocracy we see today, complete with Corporate Capitalism which comes with the shutting down of economic mobility and further concentration of wealth into the fewest hands. Thanks Republocrats, we all wanted to live in a fascist Oligarchy than a democratic Republic anyway.

I am not surprised. Canada has its stuff together. On the other hand every bartender and waitress in Florida and Arizona knows that Canadians don't tip worth a ****, eh?

It's probably because they spend more than we do on domestic social programs, such as a universal health care system, than they spend on defense.

exactly. our businesses would be a lot more competitive if they didn't have to buy overpriced private health insurance for employees. and imagine not having to go bankrupt over an unexpected health emergency.

Definitely. Canadian health care mooches like no tomorrow on American R+D. The same goes for defense.

Another lesson from Canada is that the rise of groups outside of the major political parties can pressure governments to make reforms. Canada's version of the Tea Party was the Reform Party, which arose in the early 1990s and pushed the major parties to support spending cuts, tax cuts, decentralization, and parliamentary reforms.

The Reform Party elected numerous members to parliament in 1993, and it became the main opposition party in parliament in 1997. In the 2000s, the party went through structural changes and ultimately merged with the Progressive Conservatives to become the Conservative Party of current Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper.

^^^

Why multi-party systems are better than two-party systems.

They also have a pretty stable housing market and you don't break the bank when you buy real estate. We have a big disconnect here when the average US salary is $45K and the average house is around $175K. If someone went into a bank making that and tried to buy the average house without a huge downpayment the bank would escort them to the door. It isn't even possible to buy a starter home anymore and acquire equity because they aren't selling either.

Yup.

A universal health care system would be much better for businesses, especially small businesses, that the monstrosity we have now.

And Canada doesn't have to spend much on their military because we are on their southern border and an attack on Canada would be like an attack on America, IMO.

They also don't fight 3 wars at the same time that will bankrupt them.

For the First Time, Canadians Now Richer Than Americans. Thanks, Obama!

The way Barack Obama has wasted and squandered our tax dollars, I don't understand how he can sleep at night!

Thanks to his policies, if you include the people who have given up and dropped out of the U.S. labor force, our real unemployment rate is closer to 14.5 percent.

Thanks to Barack Obama and four years of his failed economic policies, government dependency jumped 8.1 percent in the past year, with the most assistance going toward housing, health and welfare, and retirement.

A discussion and analysis from the MSM follow.

For the first time in recent history, the average Canadian is richer than the average American, according to a report cited in Toronto's Globe and Mail.

If you're thinking the Canadian advantage must be due to exchange rates, think again. The Canadian dollar has actually caught up to the U.S. dollar in recent years.

"These are not 60-cent dollars, but Canadian dollars more or less at par with the U.S. greenback," Globe and Mail's Michael Adams writes. To add insult to injury, not only are Canadians comparatively better-off than Americans, they're also more likely to be employed. The unemployment rate is 7.2 percent—and dropping—in Canada, while the U.S. is stuck with a stubbornly high rate of 8.2 percent.

According to the report, real estate held by Canadians is worth more than $140,000 more on average and they have almost four times as much equity in their real estate investments.

In a column for Bloomberg View, Stephen Marche traces the increasing wealth spread between the two countries to America's "struggles to find its way out of an intractable economic crisis and a political sine curve of hope and despair. "The Canadian System is working," Marche writes, crediting Canada's cautious, fiscally conservative society. "[T]he American system is not."

This isn't just Obama's fault. This is decades of Republocrat rule that brought us to this point. Obama didn't magically shut off the economic mobility valve and start throwing money at the new aristocracy. That **** took time and effort to establish. The new oligarchy which has been established and which subverted the Republic is all thanks to the Republocrats.

Decades of Republocrat rule have brought us to the precipice upon which we stand.

Certainly not. Sad day when Canadians have better control over their government than Americans.

This is indeed Obama's fault.

Thanks to Barack Obama and four years of his failed economic policies, government dependency jumped 8.1 percent in the past year, with the most assistance going toward housing, health and welfare, and retirement.

The federal government spent more taxpayer dollars than ever before in 2011 to subsidize Americans. The average individual who relies on Washington could receive benefits valued at $32,748, more than the nation’s average disposable personal income ($32,446).

This is "income re-distribution" on the part of Barack Obama and the liberal Democrats in Congress at its very worse. Why should anyone work today when you can make as much money by not working as you do by working?

At the same time, nearly half of the U.S. population (49.5 percent) does not pay any federal income taxes.

In the next 25 years, more than 77 million baby boomers will retire. They will begin collecting checks from Social Security, drawing benefits from Medicare, and relying on Medicaid for long-term care.

As of now, 70 percent of the federal government’s budget goes to individual assistance programs, up dramatically in just the past few years. However, research shows that private, community, and charitable aid helps individuals rise from their difficulties with better success than federal government handouts. Plus, local and private aid is often more effectively distributed.

Re: For the First Time, Canadians Now Richer Than Americans. Thanks, Obama!

Dude, no. It is not all Obama's fault (note I am not saying that Obama is absolved of wrong doing. Obama is the status quo and has carried on the actions which have led us here).

There's a necessary piece of information here that is becoming more obvious by the day. There is no difference between the Republicans and the Democrats. We MUST realize this if we wish to regain control of our Republic and return it to the Shining City on the Hill. Obama has merely continued to expand upon that which was set by precedent.

Once again. Decades of Republocrat rule has led us to the precipice upon which we now stand. This must be understood.

We should look to canada for some best practices to emulate their success imho.

Such as a parliamentary system, uhc, and other things.
