Sage Stallone Death: Westboro Baptist Church Plans To Picket Actor's Funeral

I keep wondering when I'm going to pull up the Huffington Post on my laptop to read that someone pulled out a gun and shot members of the Westboro Baptist Church. I don't condone that behavior, mind you, and if anyone is reading this and thinking of doing that, please don't. Get counseling instead. What I am saying is that kind of news won't surprise me. If I read that, I would not be saying, "I just can't believe it. Who would want to hurt those nice people?"

My heart goes out to Stallone and family -- parents burying their children must be profoundly painful.

That being said, if he went Rambo on them, that would be awesome.

It is people like those with WBC who make resaonable people reconsider freedoms. Good people see no place for them in a civil world.

Free speech is a tough issue. The WBC would not be able to exist in Canada because Canada has more limits on free speech than we do via the Canadian Human Rights Commission. It's a court-like system where someone can sue someone for hate speech. If the WBC were in Canada, they would certainly get their butts kicked in the CHRC. I wouldn't feel sorry for them. However, the CHRC has also caused free speech controversies in Canada. Critics say it gags legitimate free speech by making it too easy to frivolously sue when your feelings get hurt while it's difficult to defend oneself in such a lawsuit. The Wikipedia article gives a good overview of it:

If you're interested, google it. It's a fascinating issue up north.

This post is not an attack on Canada. I actually like a lot about that country, but I worry that the CHRC goes too far. I would be worried if we had an organization like it in the USA. I guess the moral of the story is, whenever we get upset over despicable speech like that of the Westboro Baptist Church, we need to be very careful when we start considering ways to shut them up.

I don't claim to have all the answers, and I do think WBC crosses the line into harassment. I just urge caution lest we end up damaging our free speech rights.

I'd be lying if I said I haven't strongly considered it. Counseling won't save them if they step foot in this town.

Remember the small town.. Alabama I think. They were burying a soldier..

The morning of the funeral the locals pulled their cars behind the WBC people who were staying at a local motel... So they couldn't move their cars.

There is more than one way to skin a cat.

LOL. I didn't know that. Thanks. I'd be the WBC people screamed about their free speech rights. I hope the people who parked them in took the opportunity to exercise their free speech. Ha ha.

Reasonable people would realize that what they are doing is nothing more than a provoke and sue scam and would find other ways to discourage the crap they are doing without infringing on rights.

Wish I'd been there.... to let the air out of their tires.
