I have mixed feelings about this particular incident. I am glad it all went well, I do believe in a person’s right to arm themselves, and I am glad they aren’t pressing charges against the old man.

That said, it is possible he took an unwarranted risk with other people’s lives. What if they had returned fire and hit a bystander? What if they had backup standing outside? Risking your own life is one thing; risking the lives of those around you is another.

Now, if he genuinely believed it was likely they were going to shoot people that is a different story. I wasn’t there so I don’t know what the “vibe” was. I am not saying he was necessarily wrong. I just don’t want people to think that just because one is armed, that drawing on thieves is always the right choice.

You got it. Thugs do not think like the average human being. Show weakness and they will exploit it. Back off and they will see it as weakness. Shooting their asses all the way out as they scramble to the door insures that they will not take advantage of you, if you had let up. You do not know what they will do, but by their behavior they more than demonstrated their willingness to lay your soul to waste. It is reasonable to assume that they would shoot you and other people until you gained and maintained the upper hand. Once they are out of the building you are in a much better defensive position.

What if Aretha Franklin had suddenly entered the place, bent over and lighted bean fart?

None of that happen. What if-ing it doesn't work, ever. The fact of the matter is the defender was wise to take the advantage when he had it because no one knew what the thugs were going to do.

If a thug has a drawn weapon and is in the process of committing a crime unless you depend on someone else to defend you you are going to be at the mercy of what the gun holder(s) plan to do. They are not logical, thinking people. Why would you want to place your life in their good graces? How do you know a man holding a gun on you has any good graces?

Exactly. When the thug came in with the gun, the bystanders were already at risk. Anytime a guy comes in waving a gun around like that you've got to assume he might use it. What the old guy did was the right move.

maybe the old guy should have got all the victims to sing Kumbaya and defuse the nastiness with waves of good Karma?

I like this. This is the kind of justice thug-ass punks deserve. Dead criminals laying on the streets by morning is a good example for the wannabees. They need to be so scared they **** their britches everytime a thought of robbery or violence enters their minds.

Made the news in Az. I say thank you old man for looking out for others. Someone comes in armed to pull a robbery, everyone their was at risk. Bet those two would be robbers will think twice before doing it again.

This event is a reason why I support carrying sidearms by good people.

    Smart man.
Old geezer? That guy is only 10 yrs older than me and I am thinking to myself "Am I just 10 yrs from being an "old geezer", damn. Maybe so but I am still quite able to take care of myself and snap someone's elbow out of place. Who knows though maybe in the next 10 years I fizzle out like a cheap firework.

Anyway, that guy was awesome. Didn't let the adrenaline take over and shoot wildly. Cool as a cucumber under fire. Yes, it may have been risky for him to fire on them but not as risky as a punk without any gun knowledge holding a loaded gun in the air.

Interesting comment about the SIG. I recently met a woman who works for an ammunition company in Idaho. Her job is to test fire ammunition with handguns all night long.
She was so knowledgeable about pistols. Her only negative is a sore shoulder. She wears two ear protectors and her aim is what you would expect if you shot a pistol every night at work.
Her favorite handguns were the SIG and Smith Wesson. She didn't like the Glock as felt it to be too heavy and bulky.

The craziest thing was that she didn't own a handgun herself and I couldn't figure that one out.
