Homeowner Jailed for Hosting Bible Study

I am reminded of that one time when some dude down in Chicago put up a big ol' honkin' flagpole with big, loud metal hasps. All the neighbors complained about the non-stop CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! Day. Night. CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Once enough complaints came in to the city desk they asked the guy to remedy the noise and all of sudden it was, "The city wants to ban me from flying the American flag!"

Fox News.... meh.

No, it's called data collection. I fear perchance too few understand the necessity.

Collect all you want. As long as its not trampling explicitly protected rights.

I agree with you on this detail. All that matters is whether it was a reoccurring generally open invitation gathering? If so, then it was a church, not a private gathering among friends. As such it was subject to these code laws.

If I have a party at my apartment every weekend, doe that make it "da club"?

Everything I came here to say was said:

He was jailed for code violations not for hosting a Bible Study, headline is blatantly false. If they really wanted to mention the bible study in the headline it would read "Man jailed for code violations, as a result of large bible study group." Also, how many people were present and what kind of neighborhood does this guy live in? Key pieces of information.

And lastly, the video is pretty creepy and I'm not a fan of pray by screaming.

Only data I need is that people were assembling to exercise speaking on their religion. No other data required.

If you want to make an ill informed reaction, then yes this is how you do it.

And their gatherings may have done just that, it's hard to tell without the data.

Lot of that going around these days you know. I just don't get it. But I also don't get Lady GaGa either.

Yeah, and people wonder why we're losing the Republic. No one wants to do their duty, no one wants to perform the research necessary to understand the dynamics of the system and make intelligent, informed decisions based on that.

No, it does matter. It's a residential area not zoned to handle traffic flow of business. If it's 10 people, I'd be hopping up and down saying it's a travesty. If they're trying to cram 50 people into a 3 bedroom ranch house in a cul de sac, the city may have a valid point. Don't try to pass over data in an attempt to skew perception to your side. Intelligent choices and actions can only be made when all data is present.

So, no is allowed to have 40 people over their house? Not trying to skew anything. Its a 1.5 acre property and he built a permitted "game room" converting his garage in the back yard to accommodate his group. Around 2000 sq ft. So again, if the guy was having 40 guys over his house to watch football every Sunday, this wouldn't be an issue. Or should they cite and fine for running a sports bar out of his house?

Oh, I am not wondering. I seen it coming as far back as Newt and Starr. As soon as the media realized the commercial value in dividing the populace and propagandizing their followers, it was Katy-Bar-The-Door. The ugly side of capitalism I suppose.

We have the data.

We have the right to our religion, we have the right to assemble, we have the right to speak... Pick one, any one, it doesn't matter.

Hmm, I'd say it's okay because it's the local government doing it. If he doesn't like it he can just move!

IOW, you don't mind tyranny, as long as it doesn't conflict with your politics, nor does it effect you.

How many of the folks on this thread, who don't think the city did anything wrong, got their panties in a knot when the occu-tards got kicked out of the city parks? Be honest!

well after re-writing this post several times I decided not to say anything at all - because momma always says ___

We have the data.

And what be that? It ain't in the linked article. All they say is that it was held in an averaged sized building. Don't know what that building is or how many people were inside or the neighborhood the building was in, etc.

I just had a brain storm. I'm gonna start me a church, use my street and possibly, my neighbor's yards for parking. I might even hold Bingo in the basement (offer free beer and brats) and maybe sell pull-tabs. We will all meet on Sunday and wednesday nights. Piss on my neighbors because I am on a mission for God. Piss on city codes too! We're having church here! NOBODY can stop God! Hallalujah, amen.

And maybe, I can use my light bill, phone, water costs as a write-off because I now declare myself to be TAX-FREE!

Brilliant!

Difficult to find a report NOT being posted by religious groups.

Did find where the Pastor is now on probation and limited to 12 people per service and he apparently had 50 in his backyard when cited. It apparently is rather routine. I live at the end of a dirt road to avoid this crap. To me it doesn't matter if it is weekly swinger parties, bikini model searches, or good ol' time religion, eventually it gets old. 50 people park cars on residential streets clogging them up. They make enough noise to raise the dead on my day of rest.

Seems to me he is trying to run a business, a church, out of his house. 50 folks is one hellova Bible Study.

50 folk is a lot of folk, but it can be excusable depending on location.

A church isn't considered a business.

All the people comparing this to "having 40 guys over for football" or "weekly parties" are being hyperbolic at best. As if anybody here would put up with 40 individuals coming over on a weekly basis to just shoot the **** and hang back. He was running a church out of his house. It should be treated as a church and made to follow the same ordinances every other church has to.

It's going to be a Rastafarian one right

All the folks making this argument would be nuttin' up if this had been a NAACP meeting, or an Obama campaign meeting.
