Islamist terrorists are responsible for it. But in my view, its occurrence would have been far less likely without military intervention by the United States government in the Middle East. We are not our government, though.
It might be less likely I'll freely grant, but that doesn't invalidate our intervention. For an analogy the US decision to expand and stiffen its resource embargo against Japan and its support of the Chinese 'government' both morally and materially may have prompted Japan to expedite its attack on the United States. Did US action bring about the attack? Perhaps yes. But that doesn't mean the act was incorrect. Likewise I don't think expelling Saddam from Kuwait at the invitation of regional governments and with massive global support for the sake of protecting a vital energy node is something I oppose, even if bin Laden thought he could attack us over it. No I keep doing what I think is right for our country morally and strategically (personally I think they are intertwined) and if it offends the Osama bin Laden's of the world, well... that's why he's at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
