US flexes muscles as it sends aircraft carriers to Persian Gulf

"The US navy announced the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln in the north Arabian Sea and the USS Enterprise, the world's longest naval vessel, in the Gulf of Aden.A senior official in President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's government threatened in January unspecified action if American aircraft carriers returned to the Persian Gulf, saying: "We are not in the habit of warning more than once".

Although neither ship has entered the Gulf itself, the deployment will be seen as an unmistakable challenge in Tehran ahead of the beginning of negotiations on Saturday, which President Barack Obama has described as Iran's "last chance" to resolve the nuclear impasse through diplomacy.

In recent weeks Iran has been forced to temper its bellicose rhetoric after American and European Union sanctions against the country's central bank and energy sector began to have serious consequences for its already faltering economy..."

Actually, Iran threatened to close down the Straits of Hormuz. What Obama is doing is the proper thing to do to protect American interests, since most of the world's oil is transported through there.

hers a fun fact,if yall hate bush so much,WHY ARE YOU SUPPORTING A DEMOCRAT FOLLOWING HIS POLICIES!!!!!!!!!!!!oh i see its only bad if someone with an (r)next to his name does it.
Iraq was the wrong war, since there were no WMD's, which is why Bush sent people over there. Bad move.

On the other hand, I fully supported Bush sending troops into Afghanistan, since that government was giving bin Laden and his cohorts refuge. Bush gets an A+ from me on that war.

You can't compare apples and oranges, and make these wars either Democratic or Republican. You must look at each war individually. Yes, there are some on the left who will bash Bush no matter what he did because they hate him, just as there are some on the right who bash Obama just because they hate him too. It's called political douchebaggery. I don't accept that kind of crap from either side.

never said iraq was right,my point was femonizing bush while allowing trheir own to do the same.just think guantanamo bay, they screamed day and night, but after obama was elected most the leftist activists went silent, and the few who actually fight still are falling on deaf ears,as the mainstream left will buy whats sold to them.

this may be why the right winger ron paul is so popular amongst the left,he has a record of keeping promises and promises to end what democrats have promised but ignored once they had the peoples votes.

The American polity doesn't have sufficient consensus to maintain a military presence outside of the western hemisphere. Hell, maybe not outside North America. Any soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen sent overseas to fight will always be at risk of being stabbed in the back. I deeply deplore that fact, but that doesn't change reality.

I thought you guys were all for Iran having their own nuclear weapons? After all its not fair if they don't, right? It's not a level playing field. That's the rhetoric I see here quite often.

More rhetoric from the left: When a Republican does something like this it's all about oil. Anything related to national security near the middle east and its all about the oil. Funny how I don't see this phenomenon any more since Obama's been POTUS.

Let the embargo work. Isn't that what liberals said about Iraq? Why not do that now? You can starve millions of people to death without firing a shot. This way the US can keep their service men and women from harms way and you still get to kill a bunch of them.

After all, liberals have touted the killings Obama has become quite noted for lately. Many of you celebrate it.

Or here's a novel concept: practice what you preach.
The thing that has proven the bad faith of the left is the fact that the anti-war movement went silent and dark on January 20, 2009 despite the fact that President Obama escalated the war in Afghanistan twice and doubled the number of troops there. Then he screwed up and got played by the Pakistanis. Still they are silent.

Imo about 500 more Americans will die in Afghanistan in vain between now and the ostensible date of withdrawal. I've never seen such bad faith.

From now on no American troops should go overseas for any reason. They will only be used up expediently and stabbed in the back.

I apologize for my strong language, but this is a sore subject for me.

Think about this: The guy who got the Nobel Peace Prize maintains a kill list and a fleet of drones bringing death from above. The irony is just too great to believe.

If iran blocks oil shipments from countries north of the strait of hormuz, than the US is right make them stop doing it as the iranians have no right to mess with ships that are not theirs.

America gets a small share of its oil from the Persian Gulf. This country sits on an ocean of energy ripe for the taking. Develop it instead of fighting foreign wars.

If Iran wants to close the Strait of Hormuz the British and French can sent their navies and deal with it. No more war for America. We can't even defend our southern border. We should fight no more.

Bush was a moron and so is Obama.

What is heart breaking is that god damn bin Laden won because the American people tore themselves apart as a people. And no one knows how to put the people back together again.

Americans need fewer things to fight about.

I believe in following the model of the only country that has stepped back from the temptation of empire. In the 17th and 18th centuries Sweden was a great power. It's influence spread from Scandinavia to Germany, Poland, the Baltic territories, and Russia. It even had a few colonies in the Caribbean.

After a series of terrible military reversals it had a change of heart. It withdrew, and became a neutral power. There are worse things than using Sweden as a model.

What right is it of the US? Are they US ships? Aren't you tired of the US being the world's police? I'll bet you were when Bush was POTUS.

So it is about oil after all. Hmmm...
