Does seem odd for some this attack is just an excuse to focus on talking points rather than a senseless act of violence.

Vigils are held in some parts of the country with absolutely no agenda behind them other than to mourn the loss. Child beaten by her father, two girls shot on a dirt road, house fire takes two kids...

A woman goes missing after leaving a bar and that made national news... nothing unique about it, well except she was a cute little blonde... but that isn't so unique.

Why does Trayvon and Zimmerman become national news when there's been other situations somewhat similar that don't? Why does Natalee Holloway or Jeanbenet Ramsey become national news? Why was Elizabeth Smart national news? Why was the Duke Lacross case national news? Why was Casey Anthony national news? Could go on and on.

There's no giant rhyme or reason why things take off for a national reason. The largest reason probably is ratings...is there something about the particular instance that is able to catch and garner attention and discussion. If there is...then you run with it becuase if people talk about it, positively or negatively, then it generates interest. If it generates interest then you can fill up air time. If you can fill up air time with things that generate interest you can sell ad space. If you sell ad space you get money. If you want more money you need to continue to drive interest. So when these relatively local things happen and get reported it's basically seeing if they catch fire in a local region. If they catch fire in a local region then they may be shot out into the national media for a hot second to see if ther's any buzz. If there's buzz then you latch on and run and if not it just becomes another strand of spaghetti that hit and then slid off the wall.

The notion that these girls may be lesbians, along with teens, both likely is what helped catapault this to national news...but less likely for some overt political reason. Even the insinuation of them being lesbians makes this a story that can catch fire as you have people, as demonstrated in this thread, getting upset and talking about it how it shouldn't be worthy of news; or you get people sympathizing with it because of the possible hate crime nature of it; or you get people talking about it due to the unfortunate youth of them; or you have people interested due to the soap opera type narative of trying to find out more about the couple; and on and on.

I've really basically given up trying to fully understand why certain things catch fire and other's don't in the national media. I think there's no real sure fire method of determining it or any kind of major rhyme or reason.

    You are correct.

And yet so often the take away from the right is that it's some sort of left wing plot. Media bias.

These guys sell soap. Everyone loves a train wreck. Which in this instance could be a hate crime

There is only one reason why some are national news and others are relegated to obscurity...the media believes they can make alot of hay and get alot of attention out of it....sucks doesnt it.

Oh for ****s sakes. Both sides do this **** with all sorts of media, from news to movies. I thoroughly enjoyed "300 is propoganda justifying war with Iran" and "Transformers is advertisement for the military". And lets not then take it a step farther from simply stupid leaps to conclussions as to the motive media is presented the way it is up to the point where people make giant assumptive leaps about the stories based on little to no information.

Both sides act retarded at times regarding sensationalized media.
