14-Year-Old Boy Shoots Armed Intruder While Watching Younger Siblings(edited)

14-Year-Old Boy Shoots Armed Intruder While Watching Younger Siblings

A 14-year-old boy shot and nearly killed an intruder who broke into his Phoenix home and pulled a gun on him while he was watching his three younger siblings, police said Saturday.

The teen and his siblings, ages 8, 10 and 12, were at home alone when a woman rang the doorbell Friday afternoon, Phoenix police Officer James Holmes said.

The teen didnít open the door because he didnít recognize the woman.

Soon after, the teen heard a loud bang on the door, rushed his siblings upstairs and got a handgun from his parentís bedroom.

When he got to the top of the stairs, he saw a man break through the front door and point a gun at him.

The boy shot the 37-year-old man, who was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition and underwent surgery. The man was upgraded to critical condition and is expected to survive and be booked into jail within the week on counts of aggravated assault and burglary, Holmes said.

    Re: Good Job, Kid!!

Yes, this young man is a hero. So I suppose its a good thing that he had ready access to his fathers guns.

And no, I'm not anti-gun. I do think that trigger locks are important though. Many 14 year olds are not as responsible (or as good a shot) as this one.

Holy smokes. In the middle of the day, in a house in the middle of a typical suburban block... and someone is desperate enough for entry to kick in the front door? This guy wanted in that house for a reason. The police want to know what they reason was. So do I. I hope there is some follow-up on this story.

Poor kid. He'll have nightmares about this for years.

Thank goodness his parents didn’t have a gun lock on the gun. Obviously they take the boy shooting and have taught him how to use the gun.

We had something like that near my town. A 16 year old was home with his sister and he called the cops to say that there were intruders in his yard. While on the phone he calmly picked up a shotgun and dropped 2 of them while they were trying to get in. It's one of the few times where i see the sense in owning guns. The cops would've taken at least 10 minutes to get there and both of the children could be dead instead of 2 scumbags.

Quick thinking kid and a great older brother. I hope he sees a councilor, though, just to make sure he is coping with the aftermath alright.

If there are guns in the home and children in the home, these are examples of why it's imperative that children be taught everything about how to handle firearms safely, and how to shoot them safely. If either kid had hesitated because he was uncertain about what the weapon would do, kids would be dead that are now alive.

Exactly. Parents with firearms need to teach their children at the appropriate age about guns responsibly. Teens can be well and accurately taught about firearms.

which is why my 14 year old son-who has been shooting over 5 years and has 40 hours of high level firearms self defense training at a top tactical shooting academy, has access to his 9MM kimber pistol and his 22 caliber lever action rifles in his bedroom. Of course if he has friends over they get locked up. But he normally has access to those weapons since he has proven quite competent in safe firearms handling.

at the Training academy, one of the drills is a house clearing exercise involving both threatening and non threatening (no shoot) targets. One target involves a man holding a hostage. well I have taken this class several times and have served as an instructor a few times as well so as expected I was the most successful in negotiating this problem among the 25 or so people there. But my son was the second most successful and was one of three (me, my wife and he) to take out the hostage taker without hitting the hostage. So yeah, he has access in our home to firearms

And that is the important thing. There are plenty of people with kids who have guns but they just keep them hidden or locked up from the kids. But kids are smart and they snoop. They find keys. And they are often most attracted to what is off limits. So if you are going to have guns in the house with kids, even if you keep them locked up, you still have to educate your kids about guns. Hell, even if you don’t have guns, it is wise to educate them on gun safety because they may have friends who will whip one out one day.
