Secret Service Takes Forks Away From Latinos At Obama Event

Who me? nah....Still waiting on that proof that this is SOP though....

I already posted a link to an excerpt from your story directly quoting a secret service member stating that it was standard procedure. Not sure what else you would require.. Anyhow, I think it's time for me to exit the bait thread and wander along to greener pastures.

No, you posted a portion that has a SS agent saying that is the case, or making the claim if you will...Now I am waiting for the proof....So either put up, or ..... Well, you know the rest.

There're some details lacking in the article.

So your saying the source you provide is unreliable?

Actually it was originally broke I think by part of the Presidents media arm, Politico. So yeah, fail.

j-mac

I read it at Politico.

My bet is that none of us knows what SOP for the Secret Service is. I think we're going to have to wait for somebody who does know to speak publicly and affirm or deny this.

If it is SOP, then why did Politico see fit to report on it?

Exactly. I don't recall any story from previous events like this where this sort of thing took place.

So a direct quote from a secret service agent derived from the exact same story you're referencing isn't enough proof for you? I'm supposed to take your word into higher consideration than that of an agent in regards to secret service protocol? Is there a punchline I'm missing?

From the Politico story it seemed like different events call for different security measures. If the Secret Service does not know many of the people in the audience then the security will be tighter. If they are more familiar then it is more lax.

What makes you think that?

j-mac

Well your saying that information provided by your source is unreliable, so why wouldn't I think that?

No, I am saying that if the agent is saying that this is SOP, then when did this change? And if you are asserting that this is standard, all I am asking is that you show where this has happened before if it is so run of the mill...

There is something fishy in this story. There was a report by a secret service agent that the request to asks for utensils at large events where a president is speaking is the norm. I guess that may be true as often entering a gathering with a president you may have to go through a metal detector. Just never heard of this and never even thought about it.

But if I am not wrong hasn't a president eaten with other people? Did the other people at the table have to eat with plastic utensils?

If this was done just at this event because it was latinos then yes, this smacks of racisms. If it happens at luncheons with other groups then this is simple hack partisanship.

Remember, this was a gathering of Obama supporters within the latino community. If it is SOP then it should be no problem to show where this happens all the time, right?

We have all seen MANY campaign events that showed people eating WHILE the president was there, even in commercial food establishments. To assert that this "cutlery ban" is SOP would be quite difficult, IMHO.

It's your stupid thread. Why don't you show that the utensils were taken away because they were Latinos, or that Obama had anything to do with the decision in the first place?

Who asked you? If it is so stupid, then you shouldn't dane to post in it.

Well, it's a pretty dumb article to begin with but you've certainly added enough of your own by a)blindly accepting the premise that the utensils were confiscated because they were Latino, b)blindly rejecting the source in your own article from the Secret Service that this was standard operating procedure, and c)flat out making up that Obama was responsible for the decision in the first place.

Bonus dumb! After you made all those assumptions, demanding everybody else cite evidence for the opposite while citing none of your own (even though it's your thread).

It's actually kind of nostalgic -- this thread is straight up, old school Stinger stuff.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. --Does a fork or dinner knife pose an unacceptable danger to President Barack Obama?

One wouldn’t think so, given the hundreds of lunches and dinners he’s attended ranging from state dinners to political fundraisers to run-of-the-mill stops on the rubber-chicken circuit.
However, at one such lunch Friday afternoon, guests heard an unusual announcement that they needed to hand over their silverware for security reasons.

Wow! How insulting....These people were not some mob off the street. Not the much demonized by liberal/Progressives TEA Party. No, these were Demo, delegates there to hear Obama speak, and have lunch. Apparently, the Secret Service feels that the greatest threat doesn't come from the political opposition to Obama, but from within....And they feel that a bad re-enactment of West Side Story is how it would go down....

So now tell us again libs, how Obama is the hispanic choice?

I'd like to see them try to take my forks away from me…

Well, then aren't you glad that Obama's media friends broke the story? Ha, ha....Major fail.

It probably wasn't reported before because it hasn't been news until President Obama has done it. For the right-wing nuts nothing is too trivial to be used against this black president.

So are you bashing the Secret Service, or bashing Obama?

Obviously they can't make the connection, so it must be Obama's fault!

(If you ask me, considering the nutty way that Florida has been acting, I'm not sure I blame the Secret Service for taking such precautions).

Are these okay?

And, "it's SOP" is always the Secret Services answer to the press. It may have simply been a case of a specific threat the SS heard muttered that day.

At my high school, they banned drinking straws because they said straws can used as a weapon. It was the dumbest crap I have ever head... a straw, really? It was high school, not prison... we were allowed forks though. They didn't nail our chairs to the floor.. lol. I could pick up a chair and use that as a weapon...
