[h=1]Sacramento ‘Teacher of the Year’ laid off[/h]
Sixth-grade teacher Michelle Apperson passed down a simple message to her students.

"My favorite teachers growing up were the ones who challenged me to go out of my comfort level a little bit, strive for the stars, and work hard," the veteran California educator wrote on her school's bio page.
But her own hard work wasn't enough to keep her employed.
Despite just being named Sacramento's "Teacher of the Year," Apperson was laid off as part of a massive budget cut.

Work hard, excel at what you do, contribute to society, and get laid off anyway.

Ain't it great?

Shameful really.

We have greater priorities than education, we have optional wars for hegemony to conduct and the wealthy need bigger tax cuts. And educating people tends to make them less conducive to fighting wars for hegemony and giving bigger tax cuts to the wealthy, so all is as it should be. No need to rock the boat!

Surely there was another teacher that didn't preform as well as her that could have been laid off instead.

Can't do that.

Because if you have good teachers, then kids might learn something... and eventually they might go

"Holy **** this two party system is idiotic, lets change it"

And well... alot of people would lose alot of power and alot of money.

Do you know the biggest reason for state budgets being so lean? The recession caused by deregulation. So yeah, it is very sad that we put Wall Street investors before the education needs in this country.

Right.. because California under Jerry Brown and a Democratic majority put "Wall Street investors" before education . I guess you don't know what Prop 98 is

Tell it to her boss. It wasn't Republican's decision to lay her off.

And where did I blame the Republicans? Please show me where I did that.

I'm sorry, I improperly inferred the point of your argument. What were you implying?

I think we've been talking about this elsewhere, and all the teachers who were underperforming were already discharged. It wasn't like this teacher was the only one let go.

I don't think this a republican / democrat thing. It is a we have to lay off teachers thing.

I'm saying whoever fired her was an idiot, and it is a disservice to the kids who would have had her.

Right.. because it's a we're broke thing.

How did that relate to my comment about the budget deficit?

Try reading up on the cause of the recession sometime.

Yes, there are monetary issues. Not sure I'd start with education, but it's an option I suppose. I would prefer to see less blaming and more working together among our leaders.

If they had to fire teachers, they shouldn't fire the good ones.

This isn't new. We don't havea union up here, but it works the same way. There are not a lot of bad ones. And unless someone is bad, it is last in first out. it's bad news and a loss any way you look at it. Also, you know somene won that award each year prior to this. Some of the apst winners could be lost to keep this one. The problem is that we're cutting school budgets.

Thanks Catawba! I didn't know about that! I thought the Hope and Change ended it in June 2009.

California law already requires at least 40% of state spending be allocated to K-12 education. It was the the general budget's reduction in spending that caused the state to proportionally reduce educational spending.

As for less blaming and more cooperation, I don't think you'd find anyone who disagrees with you. Remember, the entire CA legislature and governorship is controlled by the Democratic party.

I agree with you on the last part, education should be the last thing cut. We put too little emphasis on education in this country. We are mediocre at best, and we seem to be comfortable there. Very sad, we need to improve things quickly or the cost will be enormous.
