Beware the spy in the sky: After those Street View snoopers, Google and Apple .......

Apple to reveal 3D mapping service 'next week', as campaigners say privacy will go 'out the window' thanks to high-resolution images which will spy into your home | Mail Online

Spy planes able to photograph sunbathers in their back gardens are being deployed by Google and Apple.

The U.S. technology giants are racing to produce aerial maps so detailed they can show up objects just four inches wide.

But campaigners say the technology is a sinister development that brings the surveillance society a step closer.

Google admits it has already sent planes over cities while Apple has acquired a firm using spy-in-the-sky technology that has been tested on at least 20 locations, including London.

Apple’s military-grade cameras are understood to be so powerful they could potentially see into homes through skylights and windows. The technology is similar to that used by intelligence agencies in identifying terrorist targets in Afghanistan.

Google will use its spy planes to help create 3D maps with much more detail than its satellite-derived Google Earth images.

Apple hopes its rumoured mapping service for the iPhone and iPad will overtake the hugely popular Google Maps
Nick Pickles, director of Big Brother Watch, warned that privacy risked being sacrificed in a commercial ‘race to the bottom’.
I'm not sure what to say about this. My biggest concern is who might be getting this information besides Google and Apple. Are they selling it? Do you have a right to spy on your neighbor? Probably yes, as long as you are not on private property.

Not too worried about Google, since we know what they are like. They are after all very open about things and are under a big microscope world wide. Their street view is under attack ever where and if requested, the images will be pulled or censored.

What worries me is Apple... the communist computer/phone/tablet company. They are control freaks to the extreme. I would not be surprised if Google Maps will be banned from iOS devices now. Add to that, the get out of jail free card Apple gets in the media and even legislators, and you have a problem.

It is ironic that it was Google who was attacked for exploiting a flaw in Apples browser (Google was just one of many), but Apple got away with it, despite everyone in the industry knowing of the flaw for over 2 years. Why was there no senate enquiry into lax security in Apples software?

No it is Apple we should be worried about not Google. Although I doubt very much that Apples new maping software can even compete with Google Maps..... Google Maps is so advanced and has many many years of hit and misses to iron out bugs and so on. On top of that, Google Maps is integrated with web-surfing, something Apple Maps wont be.

I knew you'd say something like that the moment I saw you'd posted in the thread.

    Well look at this way.

Google is under a regulatory microscope in the US and Europe and even in Asia.

    Apple is not.

Who would you trust more, the company under the microscope or the company allowed to run free with a history of secrecy and worse?

Well you could, but how realistic is that considering the current political system in many countries?

It isn't at all. But we can dream can't we?
