Verdict reached in John Edwards corruption trial – This Just In - CNN.com Blogs

The jury in the John Edwards trial has reached a verdict after nine days of deliberations, CNN's Joe Johns reports.
Edwards, a former Democratic U.S. senator and presidential nominee, was charged with accepting illegal campaign contributions, falsifying documents and conspiring to receive and conceal the contributions. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine.

Not guilty on one charge and a mistrial on other 5.

Former presidential candidate John Edwards was found not guilty Thursday on one charge that he accepted illegal campaign contributions, and a federal judge declared a mistrial on five other charges when a jury deadlocked after nine days of deliberations.

A look of relief spread over Edwards' face as he learned that his year-long fight against government prosecutors appeared to be over, and he hugged his lawyers, his daughter Cate and his parents, who had sat behind him in the courtroom for most of the trial.

I hope he get's 30 years.

"The judge in the John Edwards trial has declared a mistrial on all counts except for the one on which the jury found the former presidential candidate not guilty"

From the link - What exactly would he get 30 years for if he was found not guilty on one and got a mistrial on the other counts?

Next to OJ this guy is the biggest scumbag in this country.............Just goes to show you that if you have money you can beat any charge......

I don't know enough about the Edwards case to make a knowledgeable statement.

Look at the posting times. I was on the page before PS's posting, I was looking at some other news. Thanks for asking.

Six counts, possible 5 year sentence on each count. A 30 year sentence was never likely.

Time to try again.

If campaign funds were not used (at all in this mess) then I assume that these millions in "magic money" were not even reported as income by those that spent it. Certainly with all of this 'undocumented' money flowing in all directions all sorts of hanky panky was going on. If you make any financial scheme appear confusing enough, the jury will call it all good. His greatest defense was "I may have lied about everything, everytime to everyone else, but I did not commit THIS crime, to the best of my knowledge". USA, USA, USA...

What does money have to do with this case?

If the prosecution didn't have the evidence to convict, how did money influence that?

Really? First off Edwards didn't kill anybody, OJ did. There are plenty of greater scumbags than Edwards.

That doesn't stop anyone else around here from making their statements. Let 'er rip Tater Chip!

nope
he represented plaintiffs who were harmed by the wrongful actions of physicians and other professionals

His whole life he has spent stealing from people.
nope
he spent his professional life helping plaintiffs receive compensation for their losses due to the wrongful actions of others

Except that is not the standard. Granted, murder is much more heinous, but most never make the national news. When they do, we see such as OJ and Casey Anthony receiving their just scorn.

However, Edwards is a massive scumbag in the eyes of many. We expected far far better of him. Betraying that trust is part of the scumbaggery:

Poll: Just three percent have favorable view of John Edwards - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

RIP Elizabeth.

I never said he wasn't a scumbag, just pointing out NP's hyperbole.

It wasn't quite as you wish. Edwards now is not known just because of his misdeeds, certainly not as heinous as OJ by any measure, but he is like OJ in that he will be seen as having used his money to beat the system, and disgrace his dying wife. It is likely that Edwards would rate high in a national scumbag poll.

The scumbag needs to give up the 80's look too. Get a haircut Johnny. And disappear forever.
