Catholics sue Obama over birth control mandate

From the article:

Oh, okay, no problem then. Someone ought to just tell the Catholic church that because there appears to be a big misunderstan-

Oh, wait, so they did know about that after all? What are they suing over then?

Um....wha?? Seriously, what are they suing over?

Another good point. Why are they suing?

This has nothing to do with the use of BC.

It has to do with forcing the Church to pay for it.

Huge difference.

They pay for insurance, not birth control. The person insured decides if they get or use birth control, not the church.

End all healthcare? LOL, that's rich.

No, I don't expect the people who deny any and all healthcare to pay for mine. But I'm not a leechy liberal.

You people don't want a president. You want a dictator nanny.

Fixed it for you.

Good point. It works both ways. They are both protected from each other.

If we didn't make it the responsibility of the employer to provide, and instead opted for say a health savings plan of some sort that folks use to buy whatever insurance they wanted.... This would be the non issue it is.

How about abortion, should obama mandate that ins companies the church uses pay for Abortiob? I mean the insured "gets to decide".... right?

They don't pay for that either. The employee does. All the church pays for is insurance. If their people are getting abortions, or using birth control, they have another larger problem. The insurance, like the pay check, is the employees compensation and not the church paying for anything directly. How the employee uses the compensation is up to the employee.

Does the church have the option to provide health insurance or are they mandated to?

Lets get that out of the way.,

They don't have to provide health insurance to my knowledge. But it is comepnsation just as pay is. There is no real difference.

ahh so, this catholic organization, decided to provide thier employees with a health care plan, a plan, that meets thier criteria of morals and beliefs. A voluntary plan, yes? in a voluntary job, yes? in a religious organization, yes?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Maybe if the FEDGOV wants to trample on thier constitutional rights, they just drop offering health care all together, yes?

Again, insurance is volunetary. No one is making them do anything. It is simply aprt of the policy. The policy belongs not to the church, but to the employee. The church merely pays for or contributes to as part of compensation. The church is required to pay the employee, often at least minimum wage, but once in the employee's hands, the employee decides. As I have said repeatedly, the compensation is the employees, just as his or her pay is. Only the employee can decide to have an abortion or use contracepties.

this stupid issue again????

the solution is simple: let religious institutions demand that all services for abortion, birth control, male-circumcision, Viagra, Propecia, vasectomies, hysterectamies, and full-body massages be covered by an optional-rider that the subscriber can choose or choose NOT to purchase. that way, the insurance provided by the employers does NOT pay for these things.

done and done.

So it's voluntary for everyone but the church who offers it. pay is pay, healthcare is a benefit offered at the pleasure of the employer. the employer should be free to say, it's against thier religion, being a church and all, to do things that religion thinks is immorral.

The catholic church being against contraception is dumb, it's thier right to be dumb, as it is your right not to work there, and not use thier health insurance that does not cover your birth control.

Some insurance covers massage. Should we mandate that all insurance covers massage, I choose to get a massage as I may choose to have birth control, Is it the governments business telling a church how to practice thier "free exercise therof"?

Not unless you are some anti-constitutional statists, I can't see how.

No, like pay, is just part of the compensaion, not pleasure. The church offers a certain salary, not one dictatied outside of mimimum wage. And to help, the also compensate with insurance, as part of the salary packet (as the church explained to me whe I worked at one of their hospitals -- it was part of the salary). As such, it is up to me on how I use it and not the church. It isn't a pleasure, and more than it is a pleasure to me 20 dollars an hour as opposed to the eight dollars that is minimum wage.

So, no, the government is telling the church how to practice anything. Only like minimum wage, the compensation will include the option for the employee. Only the employee can make the decision whether to use the option. The church plays no role in the decision.

You can't just make a statment, then pretend it's the truth because you like it.

healthcare, especially when it's offered voluntarilly is a benefit, not pay. no matter how many times you repeat yourself.

So, your evidence, of you made up claim is "someone at the church I once worked at told me"..... Sorry Boo, I am going to hold out for a more official position than what some nurses aide once told you over a bran muffin....

It's wrong. If I don't have to provide you health insurance by law, and I do, it's at my pleasure. If I don't want you spending my money on bc or abortions, that's what I will offer, if you don't like it, get your own insurance, or find another job.

Freedom is a bitch like that.

Nonsense, your house of cards fails the 1st amendment test. Congress shall make no law..... (do I really need to repost the rest).... The USC is not a matter of social convienence.

I actually use the churches words when they hired me back when, They said it was part of my pay. Today, I also help in negotiations with my current employer. They too refer to it as pay. So, I see nothing I state concerning this only my personal opinion.

Yes, I worked for Several years at a Catholic hospital in Iowa City Iowa. But, you don't have to take my word for it:

If you own your own business, your employee compensation and benefits package can be the deciding factor for many potential employees. And it's not just the money.

HowStuffWorks "How Employee Compensation Works"

Benefits are forms of value, other than payment, that are provided to the employee in return for their contribution to the organization, that is, for doing their job.

Employee Benefits and Compensation (Employee Pay)

You can also go ask your employer if health insurance is compensation or just at his pleasure. Give it a shot. ;)

Agian, and you are ignoring this, the Church is not forced to pay for abortions or contracptions. The insurance company pays for this. Whether this is from the employees own cash, it gets from the church, or the insurance comapny, it is the employee, not the church, who is paying for and getting the service.

No wonder the Catholic church is losing members daily.
They are fast becoming history and it won't be the 1st time an organization failed to keep up with the times and disappears.
RIP

Contraception is not a new issue for the Catholic Church. This particular issue was forced on the Church by the Obama administration. The people who worked for the church were used to getting their own contraception anyway and still took a job with the church so this would just be an added benefit to them. Religious persecution continues its slow evolution.

The Church is completely out of touch with its members.

Men who are celibate shouldn't get involved in sexual matters or PERSONAL HEALTH DECISIONS for that matter.

What's a woman with a serious ovarian issue supposed to do, pay out of pocket? Meanwhile the men get their prostate treatment covered?

As I understand it the church has said some of their institutions self-insure. That would mean that they are paying for it.

Obama's suing Arizona over its right to protect its borders. The Catholic Church is suing Obama over his infringement on their rights. The Supreme Court is about to vote on an unprecedented power play by Obama to mandate the purchase of health insurance.

Stay tuned for more of "Obama versus the United States of America."

Catholics should STFU and pay out the money to sexual abuse victims that sued them instead of asking parishioners to foot the bill.

Are you saying that the church would have a problem paying if one of their people had the type of issue you mention?

But I do see your point. Where is the line with something like this. Can someone say that they won't cover someone with aids if they got it in a manner that some consider a sin?

As I understand it the church has said some of their institutions self-insure. That would mean that they are paying for it.

They can switch to otherwise. However, self insured, you would think , would be for clergy. They are exempt. Like I said, the bigger problem for the church is they have to find ways to stop the employees and parishioners from using contraceptions.

It's not my intent to address the issue of what culpability the Catholic church should bear regarding this abuse, or how much the victims should be paid.

But if the church does pay money to these victims, from where do you think this money will come?

As far as I know, the Catholic church, like nearly all others, is funded almost entirely from voluntary donations from its parishioners, who expect that money to be used for their benefit.

In what way do you think it is possible for the church to pay money to abuse victims, and not have the parishioners bear the burden of that cost?

ARE you KIDDING ME? The Catholic Church is one of the RICHEST Churches there is! You think all that gold in the popes hat (or whatever it is) is plated?!

From the VATICAN July 6, 2001:

"Together with my closest collaborators, I have the pleasure of presenting the Consolidated Financial Statement of the Holy See for fiscal year 2000.

Being a consolidated financial statement, this represents the sum of all the expenses and the income of the diverse Vatican administrations which enter into the consolidation: the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA) which is the largest; the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples; the Apostolic Camera; Vatican Radio; Osservatore Romano -- Vatican Press (incorporated into one with regard to administration); the Vatican Television Center; and the Vatican Publishing House.

For the eighth consecutive year, the operating statement for fiscal year 2000 for the Holy See closes with a net gain of 17.720 billion, equal to $8,516,000 US at the exchange rate at the end of the year of 2,080.89 lire per dollar. "

ZENIT - Economic Report of the Holy See for 2000

Where will they get the money you ask? How DISGUSTING they ask parishioners to foot the bill for their SICK child molesting Priests when they're worth so much money.

"In 2007, the Vatican, admittedly a very large organization with a billion members, had revenues of $374 million, and has run a deficit for several years."

"In financial terms, however, headquarters in Rome points out the relative modesty of its resources. According to the Vatican's recently released 2006 budget, annual expenses and revenues are just over $300 million,"
