GOP kills civil unions in Colorado special session

To those who say "they" already have equal rights:

Civil unions would grant gay couples some rights that married couples have, including letting partners make medical decisions for each other. The protections also would enhance parental and inheritance rights.

Obviously that's not true.
 
Anyone who cites religion as their reason for opposing same-sex marriage knows that, or at least should know, that the real marriage as defined in their religion is the one that takes place in the church, ie "in the eyes of God" or whatever you want to call it. Civil marriages, ie the one done by the court, is purely a tax and legal relationship.

For example, if you're a religious individual opposed to gay marriage, which anniversary are you going to celebrate the marriage that took place in the church or the court room?

Come on now, drop the crap and let people have a same sex marriage in the court room, its not a freaking church.
 
I simply do not understand how ANYONE can look at this stuff as ANYTHING but an equal rights issue. Really making the GOP seem a bit Un-American....almost evil.
 
Im for civil unions...always have been. With me it is about formal marriage
 
Here is a recent poll from liberal sources...Washingingpost leans left...and CBS and NYTS certainly do...

A recent poll by CBS NYTS shows only 38% of america support formal gay marriage ..but more support civil unions.

Does a majority of the country really support gay marriage?
As is often true in polling, it depends on how you ask the question.
A Gallup poll last week showed that 51 percent of Americans support gay marriage, but a CBS News/New York Times poll out today shows that only 38 percent support it.

The difference: Gallup gave voters just two options — support or oppose — while the CBS/NYT poll added a third, civil unions.

In another CBS/NTS poll...that polled 6% more democrats than GOP....showed 67% of america believes the president came out for gay marriage only for political reasons and not conviction.
Thats exactly what I said when he did it...if it was pure conviction he would have done it before Joe Biden forced his hand to make a declaration.

The problem is that civil unions is a false choice. Separate but equal is not equal and will not pass muster.

Separate but equal is what the debate is all about....seems alot of states are not voting the way some want obviously.
Be interesting to know exactly why...
One thing I believe is true...If someone opposes your view for whatever reason...demanding they change their mind will never work. Badgering them incessantly wont work...actually they have the reverse of the desired effect. The only way is to convince them by talking to them and softening their opposition.

You have no need to convince them when they are overrode by the Supreme Court. Which is what's going to happen. That's what happened with interracial marriage.
 
What is almost more shocking is to what lengths.. undemocratic lengths, the GOP in Colorado went to get this done.

I am having a hard time buying the polls. There are now 32 states that have constitutional amendments to oppose gay marriage. Yet these polls keep coming out saying we are ok with it. I wish we were, but it seems when we are in the voting booth, we change our minds.

Well and the polls are nationwide polls of eligible voters. Not statewide polls of likely voters...

This is not the only poll. They do polls before state elections of likely voters. I was speaking in a broader sense to the one poll.

The state polls are likely influenced by what people want to hear and by giving a black or white option. Marriage or nothing when most prefer unions. Though I think that's a stupid option myself.

I wouldnt put all your marbles on the supreme court voting for gay marriage just yet....and just like everyone KNEW slavery was wrong...they knew interracial marriage bans against one man and one woman were wrong too and they are not related to gay marriage... the proponents want them to be connected for effect..

Actually, your logic was used to continue the ban against interracial marriage. You see how well that turned out. But frankly, the supreme court is going to vote to overturn. It's going to come down to Kennedy. Kennedy has already expressed that homosexuals should have equal rights to heterosexuals via his analysis in Lawrence. He will then apply that to Loving. So yeah... it's happening.

So it's not just semantics.

It's not just about the "word" marriage.

It is an equal rights issue, and there are GOP candidates and republican/conservative people who simply refuse to allow equal rights to a subset of American citizens.

You have to look at this objectively. It is not just the GOP/repub/conservatives who refuse to allow it. It is the liberal/dems as well. Dems had a super majority here in Colorado and they were petitioned repeatedly to try to get it passed and it never came up. As much as I dont like the people in office now, at least they tried and heard the arguments. This was being pushed by Republicans and the Republican governor stated he would sign it immediately if it passed. It sucks that it didn't pass, but at least these guys tried. Much more than the "democrats" who were in office before them.
