Obama Declares Support For Gay Marriage

Never met a liberal against gay marriage and very few that are pro life.....I think I will start a poll.....

Let me help you with your world view that "all liberals" are anything. I am a liberal and a very strong Christian. My Christian perspective has me believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. Therefore, I would not support legislation that would allow gay marriage. However, please also understand that I believe it is wrong to try to legislate morality as moral standards will also be higher than legal standards. I also believe that efforts to restrict rights of others generally are hate motivated, so I would not be in favor of legislation to restrict rights such as was passed in North Carolina yesterday.

As I theorized before, this was setup with ABC for him to come out and say this. I am disappointed he is using this to distract people from real issues such as our economy, jobs, infrastructure, the budget, etc.

When did human rights become something less than a "real issue"?

See, I see this as the one sure thing that anyone in our government could do to improve our economy, even just a little bit. Same sex marriage being legal has proven to be a financial positive, at least a little bit, to everywhere it has happened in the US. Plus, it is highly likely that anti-ssm policies cost our government tons of money due to litigation.

It isn't like the President cannot do multiple things in a day or a week or until Nov. If he concentrates on pretty much nothing but this issue, then I would say he is definitely distracting people. But this is just one day during a time when people were already focused on this issue anyway from the vote in NC.

There is no distraction. If anything, he de-emphasized the issue by choosing clarity over being obtuse, which is where he has been to date. Being vague only invites speculation and debate on that speculation. By being clear, we can move on.

It isn't a real issue because it isn't that complicated. People just make it complicated, therefore lets distract people from actual complicated issues that we could try and explain with something that is as easy as waiting for a democratic majority and voting on.

Fair enough wasn't even thinking about the NC thing but when I get 3 damn emails about this one damn comment from Obama, Biden, DNC, etc newsletters then it tells me it is a simply ploy for money like cp said, or a way to charge the base and get people like Your Star clapping.

Oh there's plenty of time to talk about the economy, it's not going anywhere. But maybe you're right and he did plan to talk to ABC ....yesterday. At least he clarified his position instead of letting the GOP define it for him.

It is almost like Obama got that anti-civil union bill on the ballot in N.C. Right?
It's the other side who has been pushing these civil issues more and more with ballots to take rights away from minorities and women.
You think he should have waited till Romney threw it at him in the debates?
Obama ended Don't ask... and he is for equality for all Americans. Romney not so much. Let Americans choose between freedom and a bedroom nanny state. With rules meant to support a dying institution apparently. It must be if people think the State must force it on us, why else would such interference be needed?

He "clarified" his position?

Didn't he already clarify his position in 2008 when he told MTV he believes marriage is "between a man and a woman" and that he is "not in favor of gay marriage."

Earlier this week David Axlerod said Obama's position was on Gay marriage was "evolving".

Isn't it about time America elected an adult to be president?

It's about freakin' time...

But seriously, I don't care what he declares. I don't care what he thinks, feels, or even believes. I care what he does. He masterminded the overturning of DADT, and our military is only stronger for it. If he takes this declaration and turns it into support for nationwide protection of SSM (though it's really up to the supreme court), then he will really support it. Saying something isn't enough. Gotta do something for it to truly matter.

Spoken like a true pundit. lol

Well, if Obama believed that in 2008 and he believes different in 2012 then that is by definition "evolution".

Somewhere back there I posted a letter written by Mitt Romney to the Log Cabin Republicans when he and Ted Kennedy were running against each other in MA in 1994....in it he was trying to gain their support by clearly stating the he believed in equality for gays...and, he believed that someday gay men and lesbian women would be able to freely serve in the military, thanks to Clintion's "compromise". However, in 2011 he said he would reinstate DADT "after the conflict ends"(he forgot to mention that when he was pandering for the LCR's vote).

Real quick: Before you reply with "civil unions are enough"(which Romney suddenly doesn't support) or something of the sort you should know that a "marriage", in the legal context, boils down to a binding contract. The benefits partners have by way of Civil Unions are the same benefits "married" heterosexual partners have. The only difference is that "married" couples enter into a legal binding contract. You guys are seriously up in arms over a contract?! Lets be real here..."married" or not, gay people are still going to LOVE each other. They're going to live together and do all the same things "legally" married people do. Love is the foundation of a marriage....not the contract. You are never going to stop homosexuals from loving each other. Ever. Why cant they be legally bound to each other like we can?

Anyway, I'm guessing Romney...devolved...since he once felt discrimination against LGB&T's had to stop and now he's clearly taken another position and, I gather by your very own words, highlighting the fact Obama has taken two positions and suggesting he's a child for doing so, that this "adult" we should elect is NOT Mitt Romney?

Or is it okay to switch positions when it suits your beliefs?

"For some voters it might be enough for me to simply match my opponent's record in this area. But I believe we can and must do better. If we are to achieve the goals we share, we must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern. My opponent cannot do this. I can and will." Mitt Romney 1994
(Shape shifting sack of ****)

Sure it's okay but I think you are right, Romney's opinion devolved and Obama's evolved. Thats funny on so many levels. lol

Thank you Hussein Obama..........With that statement you just lost the election..........You did it to get votes but the problem is you already have the gay vote and you will lose millions of religeous Hispanic, Blacks and Catholics vote..

What a scumbag this guy is............He runs for president saying he does not support Gay Marriage and then when he is elected he does a flip flop and supports it............

Fear not my birther friend. His opinion doesn't count since he's not an American citizen :2razz:

What an idiotic statement. Some people are looking for any reason to hate Obama. Why don't they just come out and say "I don't like black people".

Not saying this applies to the post above, but when people make these baseless remarks you have to speculate on what motivates such overzealous hatred of our President.

The leader of the free world supports marriage equality. The world and the United States is a better place.

Above is another example of the overzealous hatred I believe is motivated by pure bigotry. Some people are just not comfortable with a black man in the the White House, thus they shape their beliefs around their own personal fears and prejudices.

Add to that, Navy has made many, many posts with a (IMO) homophobic tone. He is not comfortable with homosexuality. Therefore this story in particular brings out the vile rage, hating his President, President Obama with every pore of his body.

How does an American hate his President? You can disagree and criticize, but how to you call yourself a patriot and spew such vile hatred toward you President, your leader?

Well, you do have to admit, though, that if there is one thing that proves Mr. "Hussein" Obama here is a closet Muslim, his support of gay marriage is sure it!

Yep, when I get into my car and wish to move forward, to go someplace, I choose "D". When I want to go backwards, I choose "R". Funny. that is the same thinking I have in the voting booth.

They are idiotic why? Because they are all factually correct as to what his position was prior to this campaign stunt. An idiotic statement is your suggestion that anyone that points out his positions, or dislikes his policies hates him and thus is racist. Please quit lying to the world and change your 'lean' to be what it really is.

Oops, stop right there. You were speculating. Not stating facts.

Important difference...

You're welcome.

Please quit lying to the world and change your 'lean' to be what it really is.

Buy a dictionary and look up the word 'moderate'.

I know what the definition is, which after watching you post for a while, is why I said you are lying when you claim that is what you are.

But the way you interpreted them... or should I say misinterpreted them was you SPECULATING or mis-speculating.

You were guess on what it all meant.

Apparently you don't have a clue about what moderate means. Why would a moderate NOT support President Obama, given the other choice of the GOP moving away from center?

BTW - how many posts of mine have you read. Stick around, you may learn something.

Thanks for verifying even further that you are not a moderate. Learn something? From you? Highly doubtful.

I see. So the question is do you want our country to keep getting worse or do you want it to go back to the way things were?

Did Obama really do the right thing? One has to remember that the whole "gay" vs. "straight" idea is being discredited and queer theory is emerging as the new way to think about sexuality.

IMHO, these labels--"gay" and "straight", which are supposed to be only temporary, are doing more damage than good. When people lock themselves into labels that don't do justice to their true nature, they'll just end up limiting themselves.

I think the people are doing the labeling are the ones who are telling others that they can't marry the person they love because they're "queer".
