Representative Michele Bachmann becomes a Swiss citizen

Minnesota congresswoman and former US presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is now a citizen of Switzerland.

Mrs Bachmann, 55, is eligible for dual citizenship through her husband, who is of Swiss descent, a spokeswoman said.

Can you imagine the uproar if President Obama had dual citizenshiip? But IOKIYAAR!

It's only good news if she decides to move there.

I have a problem with that, regardless of party. Those of us with reasonably high security clearances can’t hold dual citizenship so why should a Representative be allowed to?

At the very least she should be removed from the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence if she wants to keep her dual citizenship.

:)

For me it is more about fairness. If my friend, who works in the community, had to renounce his UK citizenship in order to obtain his clearance, why the hell should a member of the Committee on Intelligence be allowed to go off and become a foreign citizen?

Hell, they have gay marriage there.

so what is YOUR damage dude?

Maybe Bachmann makes more sense in Swedish.

I think where she got citizenship they speak German and French and English

not Swedish

very different countries. One is a landlocked Alpen nation bordered with Germany

the other is a scandanavian one. Swiss table tennis players suck but their tennis players won the gold medal in doubles and have arguably the greatest player in history. Sweden had good tennis players a couple decades ago (Borg for example) and five of the greatest table tennis players ever-Jan Ove Waldner, Jorgen Perrson, my buddy Mikael Applegren,, the late great Kjell Johanson and Stellan Bengston

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. If dual citizenship is considered a possible security concern, then she should not be in a position that could be compromising.

This is a legitimate IC concern - those with TS/SCI clearances are regularly exposed as part of their daily work to materials marked for No Foreign Dissemination. If you want to work in the IC, you can't be dual-citizenship, and (typically), neither can any of your immediate family.

so what is YOUR damage dude?

Me personally? None. I realize the whole "As long as I got mine" is a very Libertarian attitude. But I actually care about fairness to other people. I'm wacky that way.
