North Carolina voters approve same-sex marriage ban

It's pretty hard to interpret this any other way:

If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them. (NKJ, Leviticus 20:13)

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. [/FONT][FONT=Arial, Helvetica](NIV, 1st Corinthians 6:9-11)

Where is that in our constitution?

I thought the Old Covenant no longer applies? Or does it? What about the idiotic shellfish rule? Where's all the outrage about that?

And yet people do interpret the bible differently. Hell, christians cannot even agree on how many books should be in the bible, and there are literally hundreds of different sects within the umbrella of Christianity.

So in other words even if you don't practice any religion you have to live your life based upon a book that means nothing to you...got it.

Question....which book do we follow? Just the majority religion? So you're fine with Sharia law being practiced in Deerborn Michigan or does it matter nationally? How about overseas? Do you support the right of the Taliban to insitute religious law?

Off the top of my head I can think of the Greeks and Romans. I've also read stuff about Japanese culture. All were pretty accepting of homosexuality.

And coming soon...America. Oh wait...we started basing laws on a religion.

Reading through some of this thread, and I'm not going to name names...

I wish there had been an 11th Commandment...

The Bible and homosexuality - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

[h=3]Other Epistles[/h]In the context of the broader immorality of his audience, Paul of Tarsus wrote in the First Epistle to the Corinthians,
Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, arsenokoitēs, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers, none of these will inherit the kingdom of God. And this is what some of you used to be. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)[SUP][28][/SUP]
The word arsenokoitēs (ἀρσενοκοίτης) has challenged scholars for centuries, and has been variously rendered as "abusers of themselves with mankind" (KJV), "sodomites" (YLT), or "men who practice homosexuality." Greek ἄῤῥην / ἄρσην [arrhēn / arsēn means "male", and κοίτην [koitēn] "bed," with a sexual connotation":[SUP][28][/SUP] Paul's use of the word in 1 Corinthians is the earliest example of the term; its only other use is in a similar list of wrongdoers given (probably by the same author) in 1 Timothy 1:9–10:
Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it legitimately. This means understanding that the law is laid down not for the innocent but for the lawless and disobedient, for the godless and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their father or mother, for murderers, fornicators, arsenokoitēs, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. (1 Timothy 1:8–10)
Later Christian literature used the word to mean variously prostitution, incest or rape without any single clear meaning – Patriarch John IV of Constantinople, in a passage dealing with coercive and non-procreative sex, speaks of "...many men [who] commit the sin of arsenokoitia with their wives".[SUP][29][/SUP] Other scholars have interpreted malakoi and arsenokoitēs as referring to weakness and effeminacy, or to the practice of exploitative pederasty.[SUP][30][/SUP][SUP][31][/SUP]

Where is that in our constitution?

His argument was with churches performing SSM, so the constitution is irrelevant in that situation, or more accurately the constitution means that no church can be forced to perform SSM.

Explain please.

Which part?

Not likely to happen - means just what it says, it is simply not likely that you are going to get enough votes in either chamber of congress to pass usch a law.

Bad idea - many of those benefits are tax benefits, and allowing any one to claim another person and get a tax break is not a good thing.

I don't think it's a bad idea...."suprise!" gay amendments pop up before ever major election cycle. It won't get the votes in the State Congress so Republicans can now rally their apathetic base around the idea of getting people out to vote in politicians that will pass their amendment.

Ahh...just re-read your "bad idea". It was a critique of the bill not saying the amendment on the ballot was a bad idea.

No, I was not talking about the bill at all actually, but Samhain's suggestion about making benefits of marriage assignable to any one.

all of this nonsense will be tossed when the bans are ruled unconstitutional at the federal level.

Stop with the religious values stuff. The only way your religious rights would be violated is if you were forced to marry someone of the same sex. Since no one is forcing people to marry anyone it is not a religious issue. By that logic adultery, blasphemy, drinking, smoking, and all types of other freedoms that any church disagreed with would be banned as well. You live by your moral standards you dont make others do it. We have freedoms in this country and we have laws to ensure that no one else infringes on your freedom. Jim and Mike getting married in no way violates anyone elses rights. And since it does not violate your rights it should not be illegal. It is funny how so many of you push for less legislation and less government. So many of you get pissed when you see the government passing legislation that restricts anything but suddenly you same people are in an uproar about this. Can we get a little consistency please?

States rights have never included denying rights to others. That is one of the reasons that the Federal Government was formed...to protect peoples rights. So if anything it is the opposite.
The Federal Government was in no way formed "to protect peoples rights"

How does Bob & Steve getting married by a Justice of the Peace, and therefore becoming legally recognized by the State of North Carolina, effect, change or alter the marriage of Lisa & Mark who get married by the Catholic church in North Carolina.

Answer: It doesn't in any way, shape,or form effect or change what Lisa & mark have.

So why should they, or anyone else care what Bob & Steve do?

That's not really the issue. Most probably don't care what Bob & Steve do. They do care what their government does, and what it promotes. Given the outcome of the vote, I'd say that most people in NC believe that a committed heterosexual relationship is of greater value to society than a a committed homosexual relationship - they don't want to put the two on equal ground.

What does the Bible say about homosexuality?

So there is your sign for you. How do you feel? STUUUPPID?

You preach acceptance, I STILL want to know why people can't accept that some people are against gay marriage. It's like preaching acceptance only if its something YOU want accepted.

Hypocrites.

This post is the biggest :failpail: I've seen in this thread so far.

Quoting a bible verse? really? You might as well quote something from a harry potter book too. Each have equal relevance to me when it comes to our laws and rights in the USofA.

And more to the point: Each has equal relevance to me. The bible is nothing more than a collection of stories. Stories that mean nothing to me.

Nobody is forcing gay on you. Nobody is forcing gay marriage on you. Nobody is insisting your church start performing gay marriages.

What people want, both gay and straight people I might add, is for all adults to be treated equally and fairly.

There are legal, economic, and medical advantages to being married. Restricting those because of a religious moral is un-American.

The hypocrisy is yours not mine. I am not gay. I am straight. I believe in equal rights and equal benefits for all.

You seem to only want to help the bible-thumping believers who only believe in what you believe in.

Not only that they can power of attorney, wills and other legal binding contracts to ensure that the other can make medical decisions and leave property to the other.

Unless a blood relative decides to over-rule.

They decided they were gay. If they want to get married, find a woman or man or whatever they need. Everyone is discriminated against, you don't hear people crying about it do you? I get discriminated against every time I go to Wal Mart because I'm the wrong color. Now, WHERE ARE MY RIGHTS?

Crap...something told me when I posted earlier about the biggest fail in the thread that I might be wrong....there are numerous HUGE fails in this thread.

They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-- who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. (NIV, Romans 1:25-27)

I believe in the Bible, I am a Christian. I try to live by the word of God and cannot support people who do not. This is not right or wrong and nothing you can say or do will change this.

We are done now,

Goodbye.

How do you feel about the Westboro Baptist Church?

They're Christian. They believe in the Bible. They fight for the word of God.

Are you aligned with their beliefs?

The only thing that shows is more people who showed up to vote cared. Tell me Taylor what is the value a hetero marriage has that a homo marriage does not have? can you tell me how it would hurt society?

They do care what their government does, and what it promotes.

something being legal by the government is not the same as promoting it. There are lots of things that are legal that are not moral by Christians.

Gay marriage being legal in no way means the government promotes it. Binge drinking is legal, so does that mean the government promotes it? No.

Gay marriage being legal doesn't infringe on the rights of married couples, but gay marriage being illegal does.

I guess conservatives are only about rights if it's the rights THEY want.

Wait. Leviticus counts now? Awesome.

So, you don't eat shellfish or wear clothing of two different threads, right? You also think those things should be illegal? You are saying I should not be allowed the right to eat shellfish or plant two different crops side by side?

You know, it's funny. When criticizing Islam for all the crazy stuff in it, Christians usually deflect criticism of Leviticus because it's old testament and doesn't count. Yet, every single time same-sex marriage comes up, somebody is whipping out Leviticus quotes.
