Not likely to happen - means just what it says, it is simply not likely that you are going to get enough votes in either chamber of congress to pass usch a law.

Bad idea - many of those benefits are tax benefits, and allowing any one to claim another person and get a tax break is not a good thing.

I don't think it's a bad idea...."suprise!" gay amendments pop up before ever major election cycle. It won't get the votes in the State Congress so Republicans can now rally their apathetic base around the idea of getting people out to vote in politicians that will pass their amendment.

Ahh...just re-read your "bad idea". It was a critique of the bill not saying the amendment on the ballot was a bad idea.

No, I was not talking about the bill at all actually, but Samhain's suggestion about making benefits of marriage assignable to any one.

all of this nonsense will be tossed when the bans are ruled unconstitutional at the federal level.

Stop with the religious values stuff. The only way your religious rights would be violated is if you were forced to marry someone of the same sex. Since no one is forcing people to marry anyone it is not a religious issue. By that logic adultery, blasphemy, drinking, smoking, and all types of other freedoms that any church disagreed with would be banned as well. You live by your moral standards you dont make others do it. We have freedoms in this country and we have laws to ensure that no one else infringes on your freedom. Jim and Mike getting married in no way violates anyone elses rights. And since it does not violate your rights it should not be illegal. It is funny how so many of you push for less legislation and less government. So many of you get pissed when you see the government passing legislation that restricts anything but suddenly you same people are in an uproar about this. Can we get a little consistency please?

How does Bob & Steve getting married by a Justice of the Peace, and therefore becoming legally recognized by the State of North Carolina, effect, change or alter the marriage of Lisa & Mark who get married by the Catholic church in North Carolina.

Answer: It doesn't in any way, shape,or form effect or change what Lisa & mark have.

So why should they, or anyone else care what Bob & Steve do?

That's not really the issue. Most probably don't care what Bob & Steve do. They do care what their government does, and what it promotes. Given the outcome of the vote, I'd say that most people in NC believe that a committed heterosexual relationship is of greater value to society than a a committed homosexual relationship - they don't want to put the two on equal ground.

So there is your sign for you. How do you feel? STUUUPPID?

You preach acceptance, I STILL want to know why people can't accept that some people are against gay marriage. It's like preaching acceptance only if its something YOU want accepted.

    Hypocrites.
This post is the biggest I've seen in this thread so far.

Quoting a bible verse? really? You might as well quote something from a harry potter book too. Each have equal relevance to me when it comes to our laws and rights in the USofA.

And more to the point: Each has equal relevance to me. The bible is nothing more than a collection of stories. Stories that mean nothing to me.

Nobody is forcing gay on you. Nobody is forcing gay marriage on you. Nobody is insisting your church start performing gay marriages.

What people want, both gay and straight people I might add, is for all adults to be treated equally and fairly.

There are legal, economic, and medical advantages to being married. Restricting those because of a religious moral is un-American.

The hypocrisy is yours not mine. I am not gay. I am straight. I believe in equal rights and equal benefits for all.

You seem to only want to help the bible-thumping believers who only believe in what you believe in.
