CIA thwarts
WASHINGTON (AP) — The CIA thwarted an ambitious plot by al-Qaida’s affiliate in Yemen to destroy a U.S.-bound airliner using a bomb with a sophisticated new design around the one-year anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, U.S. officials said Monday.

The plot involved an upgrade of the underwear bomb that failed to detonate aboard a jetliner over Detroit on Christmas 2009. This new bomb was also designed to be used in a passenger’s underwear, but this time al-Qaida developed a more refined detonation system, U.S. officials said.

I can only imagine the next big thing in searches. Knicker inspection.

Theories?

dont know about knicker inspection but i can tell from that word you either used to live in england or a former british colony

I think Ive posted before...strip searches, cavity checks, and travel togas. Its coming!

In related news....

......American and European authorities told ABC News today that they fear al Qaeda may soon try to explode U.S.-bound aircraft with explosives hidden inside the bodies of terrorists.........Asiri placed a bomb inside the rectal cavity of his own brother for a suicide mission aimed at Saudi Arabian intelligence chief Prince Muhammad bin Nayef in 2009.....

Nah, I just was looking for a gentle word and knickers popped into the smoldering ruins of my brain.

How far will the TSA go? Are they going to need to peek? I mean, what if that's the ONLY way to detect these things? Could they just ignore it or will they be forced to....well, you know where this is going.

Oooh...a nice travel toga...then we can look Arabic. It would be the right level of bowing to them so they don't bomb us.

I agree...we are going to lose a lot of rights in the name of security.

I was with you right up to the togas. I'm more a proponent of a straitjacket and muzzle for each passenger.

Thank you for flying Hannibal Lecter Airlines, we hope you have a pleasant journey.

Its all rather silly. I could cut chewing gum sized pieces of C4, use my headphone wires and cellular, IPod, or laptop to privide enough charge to trigger a detonator...boom.

I envision a time where you are not allowed to check in luggage, will have to turnover your carry on a day in advance, have to check into a TSA hotel for a minimum of 24 hours prior to flight and be force fed laxatives, you will be allowed no contact with the outside world prior to flight, be issued a paper travel toga at the hotel, done deal. Perfectly safe and secure travel. Oh...and sleeping gas in the main body of the aircraft.

Unless someone shoots a SAM at you on takeoff or landing.

It's about ensuring a SAFE journey, not a pleasant one.

Scare the proles to keep them in line. Scare the proles to keep them in line. Scare the proles to keep them in line.

We are ready for the Committee of Public Safety to hear on this.

That almost sounds like a committee that could exist today in America. To bad it was from the late 1700s and was part of the French Revolution.

I bet the CIA is just making **** up now. No one is stupid enough to attack America.

If you attack us...not only do we kill your leader, we may start bombing your neighboring countries for the hell of it. I mean we are in the area...might as well.

I doubt there was any bomb plot. The CIA probably just made it up as a ruse to justify arresting someone who was planning to help fight the US invasion in Afghanistan or something similar. There are 2 reasons why this must be the case

1) The CIA is too incompetent to detect bombs of any kind--this was proven on Xmas 2009, where we know for a fact (based on independent evidence) that someone tried to blow up a plane.

2) US pols don't care about air travelers' safety, because they don't work for the American people. Their allegiance is strictly to their corporate/PAC sponsors.

Its all rather silly.

As hard as it is to believe, there are still many in the, including posters in this forum, who are under the delusional impression that the US govt. is something other than silly.

I've often told people "Naked, handcuffed, and sedated. Don't think it wont ****ing happen."

Gonna have to start up a low-cost charter business. Business will be good.

It's not unthinkable for the government to lie and use scare tactics to excuse its growth in size and power.

I'd think, to your point, it would be the direct opposite of unthinkable.... expected.

They don't even have to lie. All they have to do is generate a random list of potential terrorists and then enable them. Once the potential terrorist enters the territory of actually contemplating an attack the CIA swoops in and says "we averted an attack on America!" Then the echo chamber that is the establishment media gobbles it up and regurgitates it for us proles so that we understand we are much threatened by unseen forces that can only be stopped by further empowering our noble protectors.

People saying the CIA is incompetent are only enabling such tactics. You may come to realize that the CIA is actually highly competent at getting things done once you stop presuming that their raison d'etre is protecting the average American citizen and promoting democracy. If you understand their purpose as suppressing opposition to the American establishment domestically and abroad then everything they do makes a great deal of sense.

Explicitly letting the other underwear bomber, Umar Farouk, stay in the country knowing he was involved with Al-Qaeda and that his own father was warning them about his activities does make our intelligence agencies look incompetent if you think they cared about the lives of a hundred regular American citizens on a single airliner. On the other hand, if you allow that they mainly cared about justifying wars abroad and increasingly restrictive measures against the public, then it makes them look positively brilliant.
