(Can't believe this late in the day I'm the first to post this, but I couldn't find any other new thread talkin' about it ..)

"Only 115,000 jobs added in April; unemployment rate to 8.1 percent" Only 115,000 jobs added in April; unemployment rate to 8.1 percent | The Lookout - Yahoo! News.

Only 115,000 jobs were added to the economy in April, according to the Labor Department, nudging down the unemployment rate slightly to 8.1 percent.

The slight drop in the unemployment rate is due to the more than 300,000 unemployed people who gave up looking for work last month. At least 200,000 jobs would have had to be added last month just to keep up with the growth in the labor market. April's report missed expectations--economists predicted 163,000 jobs would be added.

Recovery? What recovery???

So more than 300,000 had been looking for some time but couldn't find work, and thus depressed, they stopped looking for at least the past four weeks for jobs that just aren't there, and they get removed from the unemployment rate calculation. This happens all the time. Thus the ubiquitous basic unemployment rate we're fed in the news is a contrivance that is much, much higher in reality than fictitiously presented to the public.

Where are all the promised new jobs?

Where are "happy days are here again", I mean the non-sarcastic happy days?

When will someone actually do something about the mess we're in?

Left and right, the answer is never!!!

The U6 looks a little better than it has over the last few years which makes me happy.

The overall report is bitter, but there were some positives. They upgraded the numbers for the last two months. But overall, yeah I am not to excited with the report.

Maybe Obama will get lucky and everyone who's unemployed will drop out of the labor market, that way the unemployment rate will plummet and he won't have to create any jobs to look like a hero. I know the main stream media will play along with it, because it's an election year and they will do anything to make sure their Messiah retains his throne.

Obama is right on track. He must be giddy.

Now if he can just everyone to just quit looking, it'll be perfect. Job seekers are his number one enemy.

The honest numbers would have U-3 at about 11% right now. But again, Obama is not what is pathetic here. Its his supporters who are the cancer on the Republic.

U6 is about to drop drastically, and so is the unemployment picture in general, as beneficiaries exhaust their Federal benefits. Democrats will then claim victory once unemployment drops below 8%, due to these factors. Sheesh.

And I read recently that his goal for tomorrow (Cinco De Mayo) is to have the Dream Act passed.

I think there needs to be an Unemployed American Citizens Day -- maybe that'll get the politicians' attention so that they can make some meaningful goals for Americans.

That would suck. Some voters will be a false bill of goods on a report like that.

Amazing, just amazing all of the right wingers who expect government to be the solution to the problem. Change the president, and unemployment will drop, and we'll all live happily ever after.

The country is in deep doo doo, no question. Unemployment is much higher than advertised. Fewer than half of recent college grads have jobs that reflect their level of education. The rest are either unemployed or flipping burgers (or similar). The high school dropouts, and there are a lot of them, are pretty much unemployable. What are they doing? Meanwhile, since fewer are paying taxes, being unemployed and all, and since the feds have been on a spending spree for decades now, we seem to be acquiring something of a debt.

The Congress is dysfunctional, totally tied up in knots with hyperpartisan lack of willingness to do anything that makes the dreaded other side look good, regardless of what is needed for the country.

and we're looking for a superman to ride his white horse into the White House and set it all right. It ain't gonna happen, folks. No one person is going to get us out of the doldrums we're in now.

Yes, at this rate, unemployment will be 7% by the time the election takes place...we'll all be on assistance voting for Ubama not to take it away!!! Drop out of the workforce and file for disability....yeah, that's the ticket

I couldn't agree more...our congress is inept and powerless.

Go to any of your public representatives websites and see if there is a section for laws they repealed. I don't believe you will see it. Most have a list of laws proposed...republican and democrat. We made a political society where we ask our politicians what law did you pass instead of what law did you repeal. We want them to take our freedom and guide our lives. We want them to expand the government and bring us to the promise land instead of the free market.

You've got it wrong. We do not expect Government to be the solution to the problem, at least not as you characterize it. Government IS the problem. Obama wants massively more government. Obama, and his supporters, ARE the problem.

When government stops trying to fix the problem, the problem will start to fix itself. Of course, that means less redistribution, and a smaller government teat. The teat-suckers will not like that.

that is a misrepresentation. we think that government is a large part of the problem; and so if you reduce or get rid of the ways in which government is holding us back, then the economy will surge ahead.

Is there a point to this diatribe?

You seem to be misinformed. Obama and the left are the ones who think government is the solution to the problem, as the $800 billion stimulus demonstrated. Changing the president will result in a reduction in government regulation and interference in the private sector (at least that's what we are hoping), and hopefully a reduction in government spending.

If you read it, it says we will not fix our economy problems by just electing a new leader or keeping the old one this fall.

Then what it says is incorrect. While changing leaders is no guarantee of success, to not change this one is a guarantee of failure.

Agreed. I am not a big fan of Obama's economic "plan". But I do believe we need a massive overhaul in our govenment. Our economy is getting picked apart by uncertainty and regulation. We need to clean up the way our polical system does business with our businesses.

All this blame on Obama........ So this is Obama's fault how? Now lets get this straight i am not "Obama fan" but, what was the Republican alternative?

I can't speak for Republicans, but I would promote a 3rd, 4th, and 5th party.

Anyone who seriously believes the unemployment rate has fallen has a serious problem and seriously needs to have their head examined.

What's seriously pathetic about our citizens is that a lot of them will seriously believe it.

Houston...we have a serious problem.

Yep, according to conservatives it's the government's fault that private employers aren't hiring faster. Incredible.

If I were against your position (and I'm not), I would be screaming...numbers don't lie. And then I would do a comparrison to the previous president.

There is no question that the unemployment rate has fallen. To deny it is simply to deny reality.

I agree with that. But what were the republicans solutions to unemployment? The extreme called for letting the auto industry die and anti stimulus then unemployment very well could be A LOT higher right now.... And guess whose fault it would be if Obama didnt pass the stimulus and the unemployment was a lot higher???? Obama's....
