Rupert Murdoch's Fox broadcast licences targeted by US ethics group

A Washington-based ethics watchdog is calling on federal regulators to revoke News Corporation's 27 Fox broadcast licences in the wake of the highly critical report on phone hacking from the UK parliament.

...

Melanie Sloan, Crew's director, said that the Murdochs had clearly failed the character test that is embedded within US media law as it is within British. "If they are not passing the character standard under British law, it seems to me that they are not going to meet the character standard in America."

This is in addition to the request for information concerning possible illegal actions undertaken by News Corp in the US from Senator Rockefeller
Sen. Jay Rockefeller today sent a letter to Lord Justice Brian Leveson, who is currently leading a special judicial investigation into phone hacking and other alleged illegal activities by News International, a subsidiary of News Corporation. The letter asks Lord Leveson if his inquiry has uncovered any new information suggesting that News International’s conduct involved U.S. citizens or violated U.S. laws.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Rockefeller has jurisdiction over media and communications issues in the United States

In their report, the British parliamentarians found Rupert Murdoch was "not a fit person" to exercise stewardship of a major international company. The Commons culture, media and sport select committee also concluded that James Murdoch showed "wilful ignorance" of the extent of phone hacking during 2009 and 2010.

Government decides who can run a company over there? How so, uh, big brother of them.

Under FCC regulations, broadcast frequencies can only be handed to firms run by people of good "character" who serve the "public interest" and speak with "candor".

Since when? If that was the case, just about nobody out there would have a broadcasting license.

Melanie Sloan, a Rockefeller, and the 1 of 5 Media Conglomerates (one of these things don't look like the other) walks into a bar...

This will go no where in the US. JMO

This is another demonstration of the left wanting to stifle speech they don't agree with... In other words, just another day at the office for them.

LOL dont throw rocks when living in a glass house. You do realize that the only reason Rupert Murdoch is an American, is because as an Aussie he could not own a news organisation..

Since forever... know your own laws.

In other words, as long as it is "your lot" that is getting busted for criminal conduct, then it is "free speech"...

Do you try to push everything off topic with non-related comments, or just this topic?

They decide who gets a license to broadcast, if that person is corrupt, has severe moral failings which manifest in the corporations actions, why would they renew license?

Since the 30's, and you are displaying some pretty cynical beliefs.

The US has laws regarding fitness to run a company too... American rightie-tighties usually love the Daily Heil, it's not leftist by any stretch of the imagination!

" ...Rupert Murdoch must have his U.S. broadcast licences revoked following the UK parliamentary select committee's highly critical report on phone hacking, a watchdog has said.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) is demanding that the Federal Communications Commission pull the plug on News Corporation's 27 Fox channels.
The move should go ahead, said CREW's director Melanie Sloan, because Murdoch has 'clearly failed the character test embedded within U.S. media law'.
Under FCC rules, only people with 'good character who serve the public interest' can run broadcast frequencies... "

Who is talking about free speech? If a news organization hacked my phone, I wouln't want them on the air. I would want them in prison, where they belong.

As I said, if that were the case, most broadcasters would no longer have a license. It is amazing this is not the path that partisans have previously used to try to shut down speech.

Yea hacking phones and other unethical actions are perfectly ok!! Those lefties are just out to get people! Its their fault!

This post is just another demonstration of the right wing being supportive of any criminal activity as long as it comes from people who say things they agree with.

But go on. Defend that hero of a man whose company interfered with a murder investigation.

I almost posted this as a subject: thanks.

Yeah, ole' Murdoch is gettin' his comeuppance that's for sure. The Britsh are going to bury that guy: they've had it with him and his hoods.

This of ourse means that it's only a matter of time before they take all of the air out of Fox News; it's just the same lack of ethics there as well.

What I hope is that broadcast and print news will use this as an opportunity to go back to being "news division" ala Wlater Cronkite and the best print media money could buy, one issue at a time.

Fox needn't be shut down so long as Murdoch is no longer involved with it. It's not about free speech, it's about the dubious character of the present owner, and the FCC rules.

I don't think Fox News needs to be shut down either; I think that theyre' going to be shut down, by being so weakened that they'll be effectivcely run out of the business: couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys in my view.

Have they arrested Murdoch, his son, or shut down Fox? I didn't think so.

Talk amongst yourselves.

Um, no, you are incorrect. He commented on something that is known to be true, some on the left have and continue to support policies to stifle speech. He never even mentioned murdoch, thus he could not possibly of supported him.

He's commenting in a thread about Murdoch. Who do you think he was talking about?

The people that want to pull his broadcast license.

It really shouldn't be that hard to follow.

His organization was tapping the phones of UK citizens, Members of Parliament, the Royal Family. The corruption went right to the top editors, to his son. For years Murdoch moved members of his former staff into positions within the London Police which helped in the cover-up of the tapping. It was all done to feed his UK tabloid empire with gossip and to extend his political influence with the threat of smear. Murdoch loved the tabloids, the gossip game, he started his empire with those seed businesses, now it might be his end.

He did it to himself, your argument is that it was done to him......that is not how it is.

your argument is that it was done to him......

You've got to be a freaking magician to come up with that as what I was saying. Good grief.

I wonder if you get as upset when the government does the same things you say he did, and you know damn well they do. The president was just saying recently it should be easier to get information from the phone companies... man, he makes the previous president look like a child when it comes to invasion of privacy of public citizens.

Murdoch's red headed girl friend was arrested. Murdoch's boy has quit, the investigations are still going on, and Fox News is next: count on it.
