Rick Scott, Florida governor: Guns OK at the Republican National Convention in Tampa

Existing state laws in the Sunshine State allow residents to carry concealed weapons

Florida Gov. Rick Scott will allow guns at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, despite pleas from city officials to temporarily ban the state's lenient laws at the politically charged event.
The GOP governor cites the Second Amendment to Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn in a letter obtained by the Tampa Bay Times, arguing, "It is unclear how disarming law-abiding citizens would better protect them from the dangers and threats posed by those who would flout the law.
"It is at just such times that the constitutional right to self-defense is most precious and must be protected from government overreach."
Existing state laws in the Sunshine State allow residents to carry concealed weapons.

Classic editorial in today's Miami Herald:

    By Fred Grimm

Mindful of the “potentially contentious environment” that comes with so many overwrought protesters converging on a national political convention, the city of Tampa has banned a number of items the last four days of August.

Don’t come messing around the Republican National Convention with an “air rifle, air pistol, paintball rifle, explosive blasting cap, switchblade, hatchet, ax, slingshot, blackjack, metal knuckles, nunchakus, mace, iron buckle, ax handle, chain, crowbar, hammer, shovel or any club or bludgeon.”

All this along with “any other instrumentality used or intended to be used to cause physical or personal damage.”

Except, of course, for the most obvious instrument intended to cause physical or personal damage.

The city didn’t prohibit guns. It can’t.

Gov. Rick Scott, who could, won’t. He rejected a request from Mayor Bob Buckhorn asking for an “executive order prohibiting the transportation of firearms in Downtown Tampa.”

"The necessaries of life occasion the great expense of the poor. They find it difficult to get food, and the greater part of their little revenue is spent in getting it. The luxuries and vanities of life occasion the principal expense of the rich, and a magnificent house embellishes and sets off to the best advantage all the other luxuries and vanities which they possess. ... It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion."

So what if they don't want to ban guns at the RNC? If something happens they will face the backlash of it. They wouldnt win either way. Even if they had banned them, you guys would be on here calling them hypocrites. Attack no matter what! That should be the new political slogan.

blahh... i hope if theyre smart they have snipers that will liquefy someones skull if they try anything stupid.

...unless they're stupid... in which case we should somehow convince lots of people to take their GUNS TO THE RALLY!

I am uncertain how such matters were held in the past (someone clue me in) and will be handled. That being said, when it comes to Presidential candidates and the feelings of the Secret Service, I am not really on the side of this.

The areas near the president and places he is scheduled to be are basically federal territory.

his explanation is rock solid. "It is unclear how disarming law-abiding citizens would better protect them from the dangers and threats posed by those who would flout the law."

Here's the thing, the life of some potential presidential nominee is no more important then mine. These people aren't nobility born with a divine right to a longer, more secure life then my own. They certainly have men armed with guns protecting their life, yet you are just amazed that someone like me also has the same right to protect their own life

    Wow is right.
