May Day protests turn violent in downtown Seattle

So you would support an armed insurrection to get rid of Obama?

Should he prove a detriment to our rights and liberties and shut the system off to such degree as we cannot control it again, yes.

What you wont hear about is the vast majority peaceful marches... Here we go "Lets focus on the bad ****ty part, that makes the news cuz violence gets the masses attention!"

Wonder how Richard Nixon would handle this? Kent State Déjà vu?

I wonder just how many red coats said the exact same thing?

The American revolutionaries weren't destroying the property of individuals and businesses. They were actually fighting for freedom, unlike the OWS bunch.

and had the colonials rioted in the streets of one of the major cities of that time tearing up store fronts and trashing ca.. I mean carriages, they would have bee right.

Yeah? You think that's a true statement? The Boston Tea Party didn't destroy the property of individuals and businesses?

Indubitably, and we did. Who wrote the book on guerrilla warfare? We did.

The government has been asking for a bit of the ol' ultraviolence for some time now. Bought time it starts receiving it.

Except the "government" is the one suffering. The people are. Innocent people working and earning a living are having their property smashed and destroyed and their tax dollars squandered to fight back against irresponsible, selfish douchebags with an agenda.

Also, what Chuck said.

As I said previously, it is unfortunate that people do not understand the base of riot. Don't target local shops, fire bomb a police station for god's sake.

No, they destroyed tea that had been shipped by Britain, as the colonies weren't allowed to purchase tea from anyone else. Moreover, the tea was taxed, hence, taxation without representation.

The American revolution bears no resemblance to the hooligans tearing up property in Seattle.

and they're not "OWS". They're self declared "anarchists." They could be considered the extreme end of the small government conservatives.

Ohhh....OK. That wasn't a business (Certainly not East India Company which had monopoly...surely not), that was "government". Is that what they teach in school these days? For ****'s sake, did you see our propaganda from back then? OWS is just carrying on in a time honored American tradition of ****ing **** up when we ain't happy.

Missed out on that whole Boston Tea Party thing, did'ya? :2razz:

Yes, yes. Let's kill cops who largely protect and serve for our benefit. So much better than destroying cars.

No no no no. Didn't you see the post? That wasn't tea held by the East India Company monopoly...that was government. No private property was destroyed in the Tea Party at all. Nothing to see here...move along.

I don't advocate anarchy, don't say things I didn't propose. I said that violent resistance is acceptable should the government act against its People and against their rights and liberties for too long. Please understand the difference.
Sorry pal...you excuse and justify lawlessness and violence. You condone anarchy. Its 'cool'. You really want to pretend those idiots in their cute black clothes are doing anything other than just creating violence for the sake of violence. Well..I certainly hope the act is returned and hope people like you join in the fun.

BTW if anyone's actually interested in learning about Black Bloc tactics I'd highly recommend this article.

Separated from these foundations, the black bloc has continued to live on as a kind of floating tactic. Now in its afterlife, the idea of the black bloc explicitly reproduces a single tactic in the hopes of rediscovering the strategy it emerged from. At a superficial level, it was a street-fighting tactic that used black clothes and masks to anonymously confront the state, and occasionally destroy property. But after its death and rebirth, the black bloc has become a particular ideology of street-fighting: the use of confrontation with police to displace contradictions internal to the movement. And the movement is left to oscillate between two supplementary ideologies, two unconscious strategies, in the name of the “diversity of tactics.”

The first involves deliberately planning police confrontations in the hopes of spectacularizing the movement for liberal consumption. More of a formula than a strategy, it is applied indiscriminately, with little concern for the specific context, and paradoxically makes the survival of the movement dependent on getting the state to listen.

The second involves trying to force the social centers, once the base of the black bloc, back into existence. Cut adrift, without the social centers that first called them into being, the black bloc ideology now tries to institute them by force. The extraordinarily hostile legal situation, and the overwhelming military power of the state, turn the taking of the building into a framework for street-fighting. And to a certain extent, it’s difficult to think past the performative gesture of reconstituting a social space, which seems to be the goal in itself, rather than the actual construction of the center. We have no reason to believe that a social center can be constructed in the context of street-fighting. The armed Autonomen never created the squatters’ centers; it was the archipelago of autonomous spaces that created the armed Autonomen. And recent experience indicates that in the context of an advanced neoliberalism, social centers probably won’t be the form that organized proletarian self-activity will take today.

In the first case, then, we have a liberal ideology of the present; in the second, a communist ideology of the past. One has led some of the most militant, energetic, and dedicated elements of the movement into unintentional reformism; the other has led these elements into fulfilling the directives handed down from a past that no longer exists.

I mean, if you wish to push ignorant argument not reflective of the actual post; then you are certainly free to claim I condone anarchy. I don't; but whatever floats your boat.

You tend to forget the Boston Tea Party.....

No, they destroyed tea that had been shipped by Britain [...]
They destroyed tea owned by The East India Company. Where it was shipped from is irrelevant.

excellent. let me know where you and your family live, and I'll send over some anarchist thugs to help liberty.

 what an utterly idiotic abuse of that quote.

How do you think they had that monopoly?

Couldn't have been the British government, could it?

I was thinking along those lines when the OP's link mentioned hooded anarchists. Those are not OWS types (despite the OP's attempt to paint them as such).

Really? What a bunch of cowards.

Seattle May day protest.jpg

SEATTLE -- Downtown Seattle erupted in chaos Tuesday as black-clad May Day demonstrators marauded through the downtown shopping district, smashing plate glass windows at banks and retail outlets, spray-painting cars and slashing tires. Some arrests were reported in May Day protests in Portland, Ore., as well.

The order was targeted at protesters who carried flags and protest signs on long, heavy poles during marches that began shortly after noon. Police say the protesters then converted the poles to implements of urban destruction, attacking targets from Starbucks to NikeTown.

From there, a group of about 75 protesters adopting the “black bloc” style of black clothing and masks began attacking banks, stores and a few upscale cars. “By 12:35, we had reports from officers of paint and rocks flying, hammers and tire irons being used to damage property,” McGinn said.

There were also reports of “sound bombs” and firecrackers being used, and local television showed a small fire in one location.

But arrests were difficult because many of the black bloc protesters then changed their clothing and blended back into the crowd, authorities and witnesses said.

And yet still not the same as destroying the private property of multiple individuals in no way involved in the issues they're so ardently fighting against. EIC had a direct connection to the issues with Britain, Joe Blow's car or the Subway store front owned by a small-business franchisee have nothing to do with the OWS cause, assuming they even know what their cause really is.
