Marines discharge sergeant for Facebook posts for criticizing President Barack Obama

Re: Marines discharge sergeant for Facebook posts for criticizing President Barack Ob

Article 91 doesn't cover civilian members of the chain of command.

if this guy had said these things about Bush, you'd be calling for his head....or for him to go to Levenworth for 50 years.

Re: Marines discharge sergeant for Facebook posts for criticizing President Barack Ob

Hold to the seat of your pants, because Dan Choi is getting his commission reinstated.

Politically motivated double standards suck. Don't they?

I can understand why they reinstated him, I just don't agree with it.

It would be like reinstating someone caught with Pot when Pot is decriminalized.

So, you can read my mind, now?

DADT wasn't Choi's only violation. He also violated the same regulations that this Marine violated, regarding political activities. He was arrested, in uniform, by civilian authorities. That's conduct unbecoming.

Re: Marines discharge sergeant for Facebook posts for criticizing President Barack Ob

its very sad that we now have to train our soldiers, NOT to criticise their superiors on the internet.

oh well.

oh well.

We were already doing that. It's called, "basic training". It's one of the classes that recruits/trainees take during their basic training course.

Re: Marines discharge sergeant for Facebook posts for criticizing President Barack Ob

I'm curious, did Lt Choi declare he would not obey lawful orders passed down from the President?

I personally don't like cookie cutter rules and inflexible leaders. On a case by case basis a serviceman should have the ability to appeal a previous decision IF the regulation involved has been rescinded. Part of the review should include the service record of the soldier involved, his value to the service and the severity of the infraction.

Saying you won't obey the President sounds too much like mutiny to me.

well, then Stein clearly wasn't paying attention in class.

No, he violated other regulations that rate a court martial.

Stein encouraged others to not follow orders of superiors, that would include noncommissioned officers.

Further:

"DOD Directive 1344.10 prohibits service members from participating "in any radio, television, or other program or group discussion as an advocate for or against a partisan political party, candidate, or cause". It also prohibits actions similar to those taken by Sgt. Stein but which are not specific to social media."

Which has nothing to do with Articles 91 nor 117.

I didn't say it did, nor does it have anything to do with Article 89 or 90, but they all can be applied.

Have you seen the actual charges?

This is what happened. Further, his full comment: "As an active duty Marine I say 'screw Obama' and I will not follow orders from him." Can't invoke your military status when making political statements.

aspdt is correct that this is not an article 91 insubordination situation.

Hopefully this is the LAST time...

I am absolutely dead sick and tired of people getting fired from their jobs for voicing their opinion (which is well within their right to have)...

This president has fired people all over the place for having a different opinion and rightly calling the president out for his mismanagement of this country...

this is how the story is presented by the liberal biased, pro-obama site MSNBC

U.S. News - Marine who criticized Obama on Facebook: I wish I could take it back

He doesn't take back his comments... he still thinks Obama is messed up in the head... he still was right to call him out...

But for some reason, this current president thinks its a dismissable offense to have a dissenting opinion...

We are FAR from the days of liberty and working together, and appreciating freedom that we enjoyed under Reagan...

Anyone who respects the constititional right to an opinion ought to be voting Obama out of his position for abusing that right...

Re: Hopefully this is the LAST time...

the military has very strict rules about this kinda thing.

he deserved to lose his "job".

Re: Hopefully this is the LAST time...

Yeah, as I said in the other thread on this topic -- go start a facebook page talking about what a prick your boss is and see what happens.

Re: Hopefully this is the LAST time...

you mean like when Reagan fired 11,000 air traffic-controllers and banned from ever having a Federal job again?

that kind of liberty and working together?

and what did these evil air-traffic controllers do? they demanded better working conditions and a regular work week. those Commy bastards!!!!

First of all, this Marine's commanders felt that a discharge was warranted. Obama had little say, personally in this. Second, please substantiate your claim that "This President has fired people all over the place for having a different opinion" with concrete examples.

they were prohibited by law from striking, and were also in charge of an essential service needed to logistical and human transportation.

i really dont see a problem with firing federal workers for breaking the law and disrupting service.

Both sides 'get rid of' dissenting voices, to one extent or another. But this Marine being discharged had NOTHING to do with Obama. To simplify a bit, once you join the military, the constitution no longer applies to you, the UCMJ does.

That Marine is lucky he didn't get a dishonorable discharge.

That is not entirely true. You still enjoy a certain amount of constitutional protection while in the military.

and what were their selfish & greedy demands? better working conditions and a regular work week. God forbid.

That's why I bolded 'simplify'. No point in dragging it out long and detailed.

I am glad was already out of the Navy by the time Facebook came around.
