Democrats plan to force vote on Arizona immigration law if it’s upheld by court - The Washington Post

[h=1]Democrats plan to force vote on Arizona immigration law if it’s upheld by court[/h]

enate Democrats are making plans to force a floor vote on legislation that would invalidate Arizona’s controversial immigration statute if the Supreme Court upholds the law this summer.Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) will announce the fallback legislation at a hearing on the Arizona law Tuesday, a day before the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in a suit to determine whether Arizona had the authority to enact the 2010 state crackdown.

So let me get this straight, the Supreme court if it says it's good, chuck the **** schumer wants a vote to try again to outlaw, the immigration law? Is this vote pandering or what? :lamo

Ok, what is this guy thinking?

If the law is upheld, then the Supreme court says that states have the right to enact such legistlation, thus any Federal legislation would face a judicial challange because it was enacted to take away a right of a state with a probabl outcome of the Federal Government not being allowed to limit a states rights. Further, how does he even think it is worth spending time on? Clearly such legislation would fail to pass the house making it a complete waste of time that could be spent on other things, say like actually strengthing our border protection.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that he is pandering to the latino and other votes while not up for re-election inorder to avoid acussations of pandering to a particular electoriate by his fello NY Senator, who is up for re-election. She then gets to take on any positives from it and avoids any negatives.

I'm sure he would raise holy hell if the GOP would propose voting on its validity if the Supreme Court strikes it down.

Queue the Hypocrisy Wars theme in 3...2....1.....

Good for them. Republicans don't like the Supreme Court anyways. May as well propose a vote and get the entire Senate on record about legislation targeting Hispanics. If Republicans lose whatever they have left of the Hispanic vote, I'm alright with that.

Not necessarily. The Court could rule that the the AZ law isn't facially preempted by existing federal law without saying that states can conduct their own immigration policy regardless. In that case Congress could pass a law expressly preempting the states from enforcing these sorts of laws.

No indication on a % that left were here illegally to begin with nor what % came during the same period illegally, so I'm not sure of the relevance. The immigration debate is about illegal immigration, not Mexicans. And yes, I can say that with a straight face.

Honestly it is a pretty good move. You either force the GOP, during an election year, to take a stand that is unpopular with the Latino group knowing that the bill won't pass.

A little common sense can go a long way.

The reversal appears to be a result of tightened border controls, a weak U.S. job and housing construction market, a rise in deportations and a decline in Mexican birthrates, said the study, which used U.S. and Mexican census figures and Mexican government surveys. Arrests of illegal immigrants trying to enter the United States have also dropped precipitously in recent years.

That would mean that all Hispanics are illegal aliens and want to get on welfare.

No. It really wouldn't. Your leap of logic is... amazing. Cirque du Soleil worthy.

I think you hit the nail on the head, what this is all about...just getting the gop on record as opposing it as a campaign tool.

However, if they are genuinely trying to override a supreme court decision...I am against that...that would start a tit for tat situation that wont be good for the country

Who said the republicans don't like the Supreme Court? From what I have seen, they very much liked it when that court started shooting down unconstitutional gun laws. I would say that the Republicans don't hate the Supreme Court, they hate the unconstitutional stance of the Liberal members of the Court, which is completely understandable to everyone but Liberals pushing unconstitutional agendas. Depending on the particualars of a case, they either like or dislike the moderate members, depending on which way they go on a particular issue.

If hispanics were logical, then, they would actually be for tighter immigration control. Almost all of the discrimantion and hatred targeted towards them is brought about by the percentage of their community that are illegal. It would make more sense for the legals to support the Republican agenda to tighten border control and end some of the discrimatory actions taken against them because of the illegals than to support an open border agenda supported by the Dems which will only increase hatred and discrimination. Of course, the vast majority of Latins in the US are Catholic, who's church is very active against abortion but the majority of them vote for politicians with a pro-abortion agenda.

But no interest or inclination in proposing a budget. Schumer and Reed are all party, country be damned.

Whassup wit Chuckie ? Wuz his idiot license about to expire, so he renewed it just in case ?

What is it with democrats and their opposition to the law?

They fight against laws to prevent voter fraud, and laws to prevent illegal immigration.

And the Republicans oppose healthcare laws, and consumer protection laws, and stimulus package laws. What is your point?

And SB1070 in no way PREVENTS illegal immigration.

No. Republicans oppose endless stupidity and government largesse. Democrats embrace such.

Now, can you explain ? Or are you just as dumbfounded, and possibly even pissed-off, as the rest of us ?

I think SB1070 is a dumb law but I don't blame Arizona for wanting to do something about illegal immigration

But the thread is about jackasses such as Shumer hoping to make an idiotic political statement in complete ignorance of both SCOTUS and basic state's rights.

In proper context, there are no "dumb" laws when states try to protect themselves, especially where the Federal Government has absconded its responsibility. Just steps towards solving real problems.

Shumer and his fellow Democrats are crap smears on the Republic.

Doesn't anybody realize an erection :)3oops: I mean election ) is just around the corner and this is all about the Hispanic vote. It doesn't really matter what the SCOTUS says. Republicans do stuff like this as well.

Sorry, but no cigar. Republicans have their dumb political moments .............. but not that dumb.

"Obama 2012" is an indicator of the dumbess amongess, btw. Such folks need an "L" on their foreheads ..... IMMHO of course.
