SUMMERVILLE, S.C. -- A 2-month-old child was killed and dismembered by a dog in his family's South Carolina home as his father slept, authorities said Friday.

Aiden McGrew's mother called 911 when she got home around 11 a.m. and discovered the boy's leg was severed by a retriever-Labrador mix the family had taken into the home a few weeks earlier, Dorchester County deputies said.
The boy died at the hospital a short time later, Coroner Chris Nisbet said in a news release.

Investigators are still trying to sort out how the attack unfolded. The father was being questioned by deputies Friday afternoon, Knight said.
"It's terrible. I don't want to go into details about exactly what happened because the investigation is still ongoing," Knight said. "It was a real bad scene."
The two other children in the home have been taken into protective custody, Knight said. Prosecutors are also following the case and the sheriff expects all the investigators will meet next week to discuss if any charges should be filed.

Horrifying. I don't think that most people understand just how dangerous dogs can be. If people have small kids, they need to understand that dogs, which are not raised around children, largely view them as prey. But does this mean that CPS needed to remove the other children from the home? Anyone could have fallen asleep and left their infant in the swing. I can't imagine being the mom. Coming home to THAT. I would kill myself.

WTF people: never EVER bring dogs of ANY size or even or even of any obedience level into a home unattended with any children of young age - or even slightly older children. Dogs are still just animals no matter what you feel about them.

First guns, now dogs.

For the love of all that is sacred we need to BAN CHILDREN NOW!!!

What? This thread is serious. Please don't bring partisan hackery into it.
No seriously here's the thing:This is a debate site. You post a story about a dog attacking a child, and we all automatically know that this is bad situation. So when reading your OP, on a debate site, I'm trying to identify what the different sides are, predict what the arguments will be and who will be the players. On one side, there's the anti-dog crowd who will chime in about various laws restricting or banning certain breeds, etc.So what's the other side if not banning children? Is one supposed to argue the merits of K-9 attacks vs. no K-9 attacks? What kind of debate did you want to occur here?

This isn't about banning guns. And banning children is a silly argument. It's almost like trolling. So now we're left with banning dogs-- which is also really dumb. Can we move on now? Thanks.

And that is why you don't have medium-large new dogs in the house around your young children, unattended.

If anything, have a smaller dog, like a chihuahua or a pompoo. Any sort of sweet little dog that works well with young children.

I don't know the laws, but I think CPS is right in taking the children, if only temporarily. Can't even imagine the emotions at play.

No - I've taken in countless 'small sweet dogs' - they're anything but sweet. All dogs - big or small - are capable of inflicting bites - nasty dirty bites.

Horrible, and a very stupid parent. At least it wasn't a pit.

Obviously.

Indeed.
It's almost like trolling.
Except that it's not.

It certainly is.

The only argument you left on the table was the pro-dog attack side. Is that where you want to move on to or will you answer my question and tell me exactly what sort of debate you wanted to have here?

Well, I'm not sure what to say. Instead of banning dogs I'd rather have a small/sweet puppy around my children. Say a black/grey pomapoo puppy.

This is similar to the kind of dog my younger sister has:

Always supervise children when they are around dogs. Always.

I really want to know why/how the child was left alone. It doesn't seem reasonable to charge these two parents while taking away their children, after their new dog ripped their young son to pieces.

****. I feel for them.

Something's not clicking, here...

The last time, the owners fed that dog? 1 day...2 days a go?

Jerry: this debate is about the article posted in the OP. If you can't figure out anything to say about it, don't post.
If you don't like mothers who leave their 2 y/o children home alone with a medium size dog, don't do it.

I'd have killed myself too. What a horrendous tragedy.

I completely agree with you about dogs. They view babies as prey . . . and very smelly interesting critters that invite exploration. Any person with a dog in their home and a toddler simply must understand that a dog's a dog. Hell, they aren't even responsible when they do something like this. They're just doing what dogs do.

IMO, one should never ever EVER leave a baby alone with a dog or cat. Never.

Whenever I hear a parent say, "Oh, my dog just LOVES the new baby," I want to scream.

Well - from what they told us in the article: mom was gone with the oldest child at the Dr's. . . Dad crashed out for a nap with the 3yr old and left the 2month old in a swing. While Dad was sleeping the dog attacked the baby - Mom came home to find the horrific scene - she called 9/11 and I guess they (emergency response) took the baby to the hospital.

My real concern is: why in the **** didn't dad the idiot wake up when he heard the baby screaming it's head off. Did he wake up, hear the baby screaming, and just go back to sleep?

What a piece of ****. . . no: I don't feel sorry for HIM - I feel sorry for HER. If I came home to find that situation I would have wanted to rip his ****ing guts out for being the irresponsible twat who let it happen because he was 'sleepy' - was he 'too tired' to take the older child to the Dr's, too?

What a loser.

Nothing rips at me more than retarded parents who cannot parent and whose children die of horrific injuries and accidents when the parent was the one who twaddled off like a child and turned their back.

Exactly. How is the mother to blame? She had nothing to do with that situation.

oh, and dogs belong outside. Indoor dogs- just gross. I know people who let them sleep in bed with them, and lick them on their faces and mouth. But to leave one of those things unsupervised with an infant?? Just tragic. And I was thinking the same thing: how did he not hear the baby screaming for his life. The screaming and blood would have provoked the dog into a killing frenzy. It had be a loud enough to wake him if he was in the next room.

I'd say..

1) Put the dog down.
2) Place the father in jail for neglect.
3) Give the mother back her children. They're blameless in all of this.

Oh God...that's horrible...

I know someone who had a very faithful dog - who attacked him and mauled his face in the middle of the night because, while he was sleeping, he made some type of noise - or maybe rolled over. The man in his sleep did something to stir the dog - the dog pounced on him, growled in his face, and whne the man woke up he swatted the dog off - and the dog attacked.

A read a story about a lab who ripped a kid's face off unpredictably. It happens.
