"North Korea failed in its much-hyped effort to launch a satellite into space Friday, undercutting its claims to be a "strong and prosperous" nation on the centennial of founder Kim Il Sung's birth.

After weeks of boasting by the country, the missile launched at 7:39 a.m. on a sunny, wind-free morning from a base near the west coast city of Sinuiju.

U.S. and South Korean intelligence reports say the rocket quickly broke up and splashed into the Yellow Sea.

"The missile traveled one to two minutes and broke apart in the air. It broke into 20 separate pieces," Shin Won-shik, a South Korean Defense Ministry official, said at a briefing Friday morning."

Was it inept fools or the work of the South Koreans? I don't know if the South Koreans have been able to infiltrate into much of North Korean missile program but to have it fall apart like a cheap toy is mind boggling.
 
To fail on that level on a day/time to honor Kim Jung-Il is crazy. I wouldn't doubt if there wasn't some sort of sabotage. It's kind of surprising that the North Koreans have blamed someone for this yet.

The embarrassment for North Korea can have far reaching implications and with several possible outcomes.

"For a regime which stage-manages everything and almost never admits to failure, what has happened could not be more disastrous for North Korea. The rocket was meant as the piece de resistance in celebrating the centenary of Kim Il-sung, the founding father of the state. Instead, this has all backfired: publicly, miserably and spectacularly.

First indications from neighbouring countries, who were anxiously monitoring the rocket, suggest the Unha-3 launch vehicle - in essence no different from a Taepodong intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) - exploded and broke into about 20 pieces, some 90 seconds after its launch.

Adding to Pyongyang's discomfiture, this meant that the debris landed in South Korean seas west of the peninsula. Naturally Seoul at once sent teams to comb the waters.


South Korea and the US are already warning that spy satellites have detected fresh earthworks at North Korea's nuclear test site at Punggye in the north-east, suggesting that a fresh nuclear test may be in the offing. That would be far more serious than a rocket. In both 2006 and 2009, Pyongyang's missile tests were followed by nuclear tests.

The fear is that an embarrassed and embattled Kim Jong-un, or the generals around him, might react to their rocket failure with redoubled determination to cause a big bang that will work this time - and remind the world that North Korea is not to be laughed at or trifled with.

China will exert pressure - more so than over the rocket - to head off any new nuclear test, but it may not succeed. Face has been badly lost, and pride is now at stake. This could be a dangerous moment, and things in North Korea may have to get worse before they get better.

Alternatively, Pyongyang's technocrats and doves may finally seize their chance and see off the militarists."

Here's what I think. Ever see the movie "The Mouse That Roared"? North Korea WANTS the US to declare war on them so they can surrender and receive free aid from us.......... Well, it's either that or the new leader of NK is as loony as the old one..... Yea, I think it's this. LOL.
 
I'll bet the rocket used a lot of Chinese parts.

I think tank in Austrailia believes this will force them into a Nuclear test this year in attempt to save face. Let's hope not.
 
Looks like Lil' Kim will go to bed without dinner. Obama pulled the food aid the North Koreans were supposed to get.

"The U.S. will not go forward with planned food aid for North Korea after the nation's unsuccessful attempt to launch a long-range missile rocket, the White House said. "Despite the failure of its attempted missile launch, North Korea's provocative action threatens regional security, violates international law and contravenes its own recent commitments," the White House said in a statement condemning the launch."

I reply wonder what the ramifications are going to be. The Son will have to do something visible and dramatic to save face with his people.

Rush another nuke test? Shell South Korea again? Sink another South Korean ship?
