(Reuters) - Two members of the U.S. Coast Guard were shot dead at an air base on Kodiak Island off Alaska, prompting an investigation by the FBI and a lockdown of the base and nearby schools, officials said on Thursday.

The Guardsmen were found fatally shot on Thursday at a communications center of the Coast Guard Base Kodiak, about 250 miles (400 km( southwest of Anchorage. Authorities were looking for a potential suspect who might be at large, the Coast Guard said.

FBI agents will direct the investigation, which is standard at a federal facility, FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez said in Anchorage. He said there was "no indication that this is related to any kind of terrorist act."

Wow - I hadn't heard a peep about this from US news sources yet - too busy focusing on N Korea I guess.

:(..................

A town of 6300 people....I hope they find who did it.

That's terrible. The coast guard in Alaska is a lifeline for fishermen and people in remote locations who have emergency situations. Without them, dozens upon dozens of people would die every year. This is just senseless and bleak.

Yup. And the news is too busy about the zimmerman case to talk about it.
