Readers react to Ozzie Guillen’s Castro comments

how about if a yankee baseball player said he opposed bibi's policy oppressing gazans. would that be punishable in a city with an influential jewish population?
or if a detroit or atlanta baseball player expressed opposition to al sharpton stirring the racial pot in florida. would that deserve suspension because of the significant black population in those cities?

I was just reminded of Marge Schott, the former owners of the Reds, being suspended from Baseball activities for a full year for expressing her personal opinion about Hitler's policies actually being beneficial to Germany (until he went off the rails). This seems fairly similar to Ozzie's comment.

Me too. Time will tell. For sure Miami is not a great sports city.

Sometimes I miss living outside New England. Those are the times I could actually go to a baseball game for less than $50. I went to a Ranger's game for $7 not to long ago. I miss that.

They just moved into a brand new, beautiful, retractrable roof stadium, and the owner finally opened his wallet to get some legitimate stars. I think the days of the Marlins playing to an empty house are over. It sucked watching them play in a football stadium in the blazing sun, with frequent downpours.

one of the reader's comments in the cited story opined that ozzie may have solved the parking shortage at the new stadium

What exactly does he respect about him? His police state? Human rights? Spying on neighbors and reporting back to the regime? Speaking against the regime lands you in prison. His regime has had the longest serving political prisoner in world history: over 28 years. Disease, suicides, murdering his own people. Yeah, I can see how he would have respect for the man.

It's rhetorical...no answer is necessary.

ozzie made it clear that he was not a fan of castro's politics but of his tenacity. his ability to stick around despite repeated attempts to neutralize him. he expressed the same thing about venezuela's ortega
being outspoken and rather tenacious himself, ozzie probably values those aspects of their personalities

Now, if we can get something like that up in the Tampa area, the Rays won't be playing ball in an empty sardine can.

Ozzie just doesn't know when to STFU. He is free to be very stupid. Proven now.

that's why i am a fan of AAA baseball
you get to see tomorrow's stars (Ripkin, Thome, Eddie Murray, Canseco, Manny Ramierz) before they were called up
crockett park.jpg
this wooden stadium was located around the corner before it was burned down in a teen prank. crockett park was a great place to watch high calbre baseball on the cheap. the beer was cheap, too. so much so that i usually had to crawl home

Wasn't much fodder with Ozzie regardless. PR comes with his job, and while he may not be too good with the positives of it, he needs to be sure to not be a negative contributor.

As for baseball on the cheap .... Spring Training is all of that. And you get to see today's stars too. Before they relocated to the cactus league, the Indians were close by here in central Florida. Used to sit 5 rows behind the visitors dugout for $12. It was under cover from the sun too. Yankees. Cardinals. Braves. Phillies. Rays. Tigers. Blue Jays. Dodgers (before they went Cactus too). Some of the South Florida clubs won't come up and play cental Florida, such as the Orioles and Red Sox and Mets.

I am with you on the derailing...best baseball in New England...Cape Cod Summer League.

Everyone in baseball, and every baseball fan, knows that Ozzie is a habitual loose cannon. I'd say this is a case where the Marlins assumed the risk. Doesn't excuse him for being a dimwit, but he doesn't seem to have a filter between his brain and his mouth.
