Connecticut Senate votes to abolish death penalty amid victim concerns

The 20-16 Senate vote is a major victory for the proposal, which would make life imprisonment the maximum penalty in the state. The proposal is expected to easily pass the state House of Representatives, and Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has said he would sign the legislation into law if it reaches his desk.

I am actually shocked that CT would do this now. No, I am not shocked that CT would get rid of its death penalty, but that it would do it now. Turmoil still exists from the Home Invasion murders in CT.

There is no question to these two guys guilt. These are the people CT wants killed, so again, I find the ruling surprising.

    Good for them.

Re: Connecticut Senate votes to abolish death penalty amid victim concerns

The politicians of the State of Connecticut (where I grew up) have been unwilling to actually USE the death penalty, so why bother to have it still on the books? I am a STRONG proponent of the death penalty but if you aren't actually going to kill these people there is no reason to waste everyone's time having it as part of the law.

Just another proof that New England is truly living up to its name.... A New version of the same old English liberalism and socialism that has been killing this country for a century and a half.

How very not barbaric of them.

I believe that every state that holds executions should have an executioner, not a group of guys that pull levers simultaneously. Not a firing squad with only one live round rifle. A real Grim Reaper without a hood to protect to their identity. Someone who can claim to be almost God.

If we can't have that, something is wrong with killing the guilty along with the innocent.

I am sure the Doctor from Chesire would pull the lever. They raped his wife and daughters and left them to burn to death.

I'm in favor of this and I'm not sure why it matters that victims are concerned about this. They aren't the only people in the state.

This idea that victims require or deserve violent retribution is frankly disgusting. We should stop using people who are in pain as an excuse to justify killing people. Senator Prague is absolutely correct. The only way to ensure that you don't execute any innocent people is not to execute anyone at all. By all means, keep violent criminals locked up. But don't turn us all into killers.

On the other hand, after thousands of years of domestication, there is still only one way to deal with a mad dog. And it's not the dog's fault he got sick.
