Owe The IRS? Bill Would Suspend Passport Rights For Delinquent Taxpayers « CBS Los Angeles

A bill authored by a Southland lawmaker that could potentially allow the federal government to prevent any Americans who owe back taxes from traveling outside the U.S. is one step closer to becoming law.Senate Bill 1813 was introduced back in November by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Los Angeles) to “reauthorize Federal-aid highway and highway safety construction programs, and for other purposes” .
After clearing the Senate on a 74 – 22 vote on March 14, SB 1813 is now headed for a vote in the House of Representatives, where it’s expected to encounter stiffer opposition among the GOP majority.

As your liberties slowly slip away...

Good. While I don't agree with how our current tax code is implemented if you don't pay you should experience a harsher penalty than is currently being enforced. This one sounds reasonable

Got to love you Arbo. Based on the title I would think you work for NBC in the editing department.

"Section 40304 of the legislation states that any individual who owes more than $50,000 to the Internal Revenue Service may be subject to “action with respect to denial, revocation, or limitation of a passport”.

So how many regular citizens who travel owe $50,000 in back federal taxes? Someone owing that much back taxes could be a flight risk. I would hold them to within the US till they paid up.

and wait there is more you fail to add to your "As your liberties slowly slip away... " response. There are exceptions to allow travel for those that owe +50K.
"The bill does allow for exceptions in the event of emergency or humanitarian situations or limited return travel to the U.S., or in cases when any tax debt is currently being repaid in a “timely manner” or when collection efforts have been suspended."

So why do you have a proble with this bill?

But how will all the politicians travel outside the country on our dime??

Perhaps you missed the rules for starting a thread in the BN forum:

II - All Opening Post threads posted in *BN* must have:

• Static link to an article from a bona-fide news organization.
• Dateline within the past 48 hours.
• Exact same title as the cited article.
• Quoted short excerpts from the article.
• Your own unique content to spur discussion.

Perhaps you missed the rules for starting a thread in the BN forum:

ok, I will give you that one.

How about answering the rest of the questions.

We do want to "spur discussion".

Perhaps you missed the rules for starting a thread in the BN forum:

It is the rule. Perhaps the dumbest rule ever made though for a user generated content forum.

Please provide proof that "all politicians" owe 50K or more in federal taxes.

I believe they already have enough power to ensure they collect 'their' money. I do not agree with expanding government power. It set's precedent, then they can lower the bar, or worse.

It is what it is.

Let me rephrase, as I did not mean 'all politicians', I meant 'all the politicians', as in all of them that owe loads of back taxes. Heck, how many people did this administration try to appoint to positions that had back tax 'issues'?

The original statement was tongue in cheek as well.

Good to know.

Guess I don't really care about the bill. It has enough loop holes, and I doubt if I would ever get myself in a position to owe 50K or more in back taxes. For those who are, its is a shame they have failed to pay the taxes due. I am not debating if the tax system if just or fair. It is what it is each year. Each should pay according to the current rules.

Because...because...FREEDOM!!!

Anything the government can do to increase compliance? I'm pretty much okay with it. If most of us only knew how many people were scoffing at the IRS as the rest of us fork over, I'm pretty sure we'd be amazed.

Here's a little scam: Realtors aren't employees of their companies. They're independent contractors. As such, companies don't withhold income tax. And at the end of the year, they issue 1099's. Well, Realtors aren't particularly good at setting aside their taxes -- especially since they know that if they don't pay for three or four years, they'll be able to settle for 25-cents (or even less) on the dollar down the road.

That's just not fair to the rest of us. Pay your share, damn it!! Can't travel to Europe on the USA's dime? Goody.

it's an unnecessary rule really, there is nowhere on the planet that you can hide from the IRS as it is.
you would have to go to extraordinary lengths to escape them... basically providing your own private prison.

don't pay your taxes.. and you don't get to take exciting trips abroad.. like to Canada or Mexico for the day.

only non-evil people can go to Canada or Mexico for the day.

well that's not true.. people can still get into Canada and Mexico, you just can't get back in the US... you'd be locked out of the country... then probably get fired from your job or lose your business.
...and we all know how losing your income really really helps you pay your tax bill.

I love the name for this law..

"Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act"...

awesome.

someone riddle me this... how can a right be violated without due process and without being charged or convicted of a crime?...
easy... violate those rights using an IRS lien as your justification and mechanism.
mandating penalties and interest on unpaid taxes.. nope, gotta restrict travel too.

Your liberty to not pay your taxes? Dude, if you can't pay your taxes, you can't afford to travel abroad. Linking the two things is not an entirely bad idea, absent some specific reason to suggest otherwise.

What's next? If you can't afford to pay your taxes, you shouldn't be able to afford a place to live? You shouldn't be able to cross statelines? Own a vehicle? Have kids?

This is how tyrrany begins.
