Owe The IRS? Bill Would Suspend Passport Rights For Delinquent Taxpayers

Owe The IRS? Bill Would Suspend Passport Rights For Delinquent Taxpayers « CBS Los Angeles

A bill authored by a Southland lawmaker that could potentially allow the federal government to prevent any Americans who owe back taxes from traveling outside the U.S. is one step closer to becoming law.Senate Bill 1813 was introduced back in November by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Los Angeles) to “reauthorize Federal-aid highway and highway safety construction programs, and for other purposes” .
After clearing the Senate on a 74 – 22 vote on March 14, SB 1813 is now headed for a vote in the House of Representatives, where it’s expected to encounter stiffer opposition among the GOP majority.

Good. While I don't agree with how our current tax code is implemented if you don't pay you should experience a harsher penalty than is currently being enforced. This one sounds reasonable

Got to love you Arbo. Based on the title I would think you work for NBC in the editing department.

"Section 40304 of the legislation states that any individual who owes more than $50,000 to the Internal Revenue Service may be subject to “action with respect to denial, revocation, or limitation of a passport”.

So how many regular citizens who travel owe $50,000 in back federal taxes? Someone owing that much back taxes could be a flight risk. I would hold them to within the US till they paid up.

and wait there is more you fail to add to your "As your liberties slowly slip away... " response. There are exceptions to allow travel for those that owe +50K.
"The bill does allow for exceptions in the event of emergency or humanitarian situations or limited return travel to the U.S., or in cases when any tax debt is currently being repaid in a “timely manner” or when collection efforts have been suspended."

All of this taken from your provided link.
So why do you have a proble with this bill?

It is the rule. Perhaps the dumbest rule ever made though for a user generated content forum.

Please provide proof that "all politicians" owe 50K or more in federal taxes.

I believe they already have enough power to ensure they collect 'their' money. I do not agree with expanding government power. It set's precedent, then they can lower the bar, or worse.

Let me rephrase, as I did not mean 'all politicians', I meant 'all the politicians', as in all of them that owe loads of back taxes. Heck, how many people did this administration try to appoint to positions that had back tax 'issues'?

The original statement was tongue in cheek as well.
