Now this is going to interesting to see how this plays out. "Captive audience". What exactly does that mean? Who determines exactly what a "captive audience" is and isn't? Fascinating. Here is an exerpt from the story.

"The video begins with Mark Mackey opening his Bible.

“Good morning, everyone,” he says to a crowd of 15 onlookers waiting outside the Hemet California Division of Motor Vehicles. “I would like to read a little bit of the word of God this morning.”

The video, shot in February of last year, ends with Mackey’s arrest.

“You can preach on your own property,” an officer from the California state patrol tells Mackey as he leads him away in handcuffs. “Folks, this is what the United States is coming to,” Mackey says to the crowd, who were standing outside waiting for the DMV to open. “You can talk about anything you want, but you can’t talk about the Bible.”

This is just silly. People stand outside businesses all the time protesting things, pushing their ideas, chanting, rallying, ect. What this man is doing is no different other than his faith. This is further suppression of the christain faiths because here in America it is wrong to be openly religious if you are Christian or similar faiths (other religions are ok and encouraged). If this guy was reading from the Koran he would be ok and any attempt by the police to remove him would have been deemed racist and intolerant.

Misleading thread title.

Everything you wrote is complete horse****. When your argument depends on hypothetical hypocrisy, you don't have an argument.

Would you agree that muslims should not be allowed to preach in public anymore either then? What about anti/pro abortion rallies? Tea party? Any group or person that decides to put on a public display should be arrested unless they have the proper permits?

If they're on other people's property, then it's up to the owner.

no permits, no preachy.

You were implying the man was thrown out just for reading the bible. It's where he did it that matters.

Re: Man Arrested For Reading The Bible Out Loud

would it be acceptable for the KKK members to proselytize the citizens assembled on government property, who are there to fulfill government requirements
how about the nation of islam
or possibly the new black panther party
only if you would agree those first amendment expressions on government grounds to a captive audience would be acceptable could you then also agree that the Bible thumper reading from his religious tract should also be found acceptable

He was reading. Good luck trying to prove he was "proselytizing" along with proving whatever a "captive audience" is.

If it is acceptable for one group then it should be acceptable for them all. I have encountered countless muslims preaching around towns in various spots. NBPP and other racists groups pushing their hate around towns. I cant recall any time I have ever seen the KKK to be honest but they are no different than the black panthers or naacp or any religious group including islam or catholics or OWS, pro or anti abortion groups, political groups pushing a candidate or anyone else.

Equality.

Because the same rules that prevent him from doing what he did would also prevent him from going on about a cause to save the whales. It isn't the content of what he was saying that he was arrested for. It was his disruptive behavior towards a group of people who had no practical means to avoid what he was saying, in a non-public forum. If he had gone over to the street corner and spoke from there, he would have been fine. If he had been talking about Scientology, environmental crusades, how much he loves American Idol, or pretty much anything that wasn't suggesting a commercial transaction, he would still have been arrested. If he had been doing this outside of a mall, where people didn't have to stop and listen to him, he would have been fine.

That's how the law works in this instance. His choice of subject matter was not relevant to his arrest.

Re: Man Arrested For Reading The Bible Out Loud

Then every OWL protestor at Wall Street and every protestor inside the Wisconsin state capital should have been arrested. Both involved a "captive audience going about their business
- private business or with the government.

With the officers statement of "you can preach on your own property" he should be removed from any law enforcement employment.

Re: Man Arrested For Reading The Bible Out Loud

Tyler points out that the “captive audience” statute requires more than simple intimidation.

“Mackey had to be threatening them. Is reading the Bible threatening?”

Tyler says that, in the end, Mackey has simply been charged with trespassing.

How can that be trespassing?” Tyler asks. “This is a public place. He was not blocking or impeding anyone. He was standing over 50 feet from the entrance. This is crazy.”

It's public property, the state is incorrect in charging this guy with anything. The cop needs to be re-educated and go back to policeman school. A very interesting case as it demonstrates what others call a war on Christianity.

Re: Man Arrested For Reading The Bible Out Loud

No i dont at all. Especially when its peaceful.

So you think this man was wrong but the OWS group was ok? So its only ok for people to publically voice their beliefs if you agree with them? That sounds like discrimination to me.

No i never said any of that.
I dont have a problem with what this guy was doing or what the OWS group was doing....
