Re: Parents of murdered British students criticise Barack Obama (edited)

There are plenty of legitimate issues upon which we can sling mud when it comes to Obama. This is such an incredibly ridiculous non-issue I'm surprised anybody bothered with writing the article.

Murder is always a tragedy for somebody. Should the president hold a press conference everyday to prepare a personal speech for every person murdered? Why stop there? Why not make him prepare a personal speech for every person who dies in this country every day. And when he gets into the swing of things we can also get him involved in speeches for those who die overseas, as well.

    Absolutely ridiculous.

Why the fuss? It's not as if they were American or anything.

Right, because we only express the level of tragedy when it's an American. We completely ignore anybody else who experiences loss in this country. Which is why we're so damned evil to all those foreign-born immigrants that come here every year (legally and illegally) to seek a better life for themselves.

You're right. I am sure thousands if not tens of thousands of kids who could look like his son are murdered every year, mostly by other kids who could look like his son. Surely he can't take the time to comment on them all - completely understandable!

In my experience, Obama rarely, if ever, comments on the death of anybody. In the case of Martin, he was specifically asked for his view on the situation. Has he been specifically asked by the press for his comments on the multitude of deaths that occur in the U.S. everyday? I'm betting no. This is just a fool's game.

Nobody is demanding he "prepare a personal speech for every person murdered" - just pointing out that the line dividing those he chooses to speak out upon and those he chooses not to... is a political one:

"We would like to publicly express our dissatisfaction at the lack of any public or private message of support or condolence from any American governing body or indeed, President Obama himself...It would perhaps appear that Mr Obama sees no political value in facilitating such a request"

    Answer: True

As to there being "plenty of legitimate issues upon which we can sling mud" -- the only reason this story came about is because the Trayvon Martin has topped the news cycle for several days now.

Let me make this as clear as possible:

The press corps asked Obama to comment on the Trayvon Martin case, and he did.

Did the press corps ask Obama to comment on the case referenced in this article? Did anybody outside of those in that community even know about that case until this article came out?

No? Well then just maybe it has nothing to do with political expediency and everything to do with how the media controls the flow of information.

When asked by the press to comment on the execution of Troy Davis, the adminstration response was that Obama "has worked to ensure accuracy and fairness in the criminal justice system," and that it is not appropriate for him "to weigh in on specific cases like this one, which is a state prosecution." Basically a cop-out on having to comment on that particular case. And, hollow words given that he has chosen to "weigh in on specific [state prosecution] cases" a number of times: Duke Lacrosse, the Beer Summit fiasco, Penn State, etc.

    Link?.......
Also, the bolded? Another reason the Martin case is different, as federal investigative agencies are and were involved in this case at the time of the press corp question to Obama

Why does he comment on ANY of them then? Oh, when he thinks he can make political hay out of one he does. I see.
