The US has suspended food aid to North Korea because Pyongyang has broken its promise to refrain from missile launches and cannot be trusted to deliver the aid to those who need it, a Pentagon official has said.
A planned rocket launch next month by North Korea "reflects their lack of desire to follow through on their international commitments", Peter Lavoy, acting assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific affairs, told US legislators, on Wednesday.

"So we've been forced to suspend our activities to provide nutritional assistance to North Korea," he said before the House Armed Services Committee.
In light of North Korea's actions, the US had "no confidence" that it was possible to "to ensure that the food assistance goes to the starving people and not the regime elite".
Under a deal reached last month, North Korea had agreed to a partial nuclear freeze and a missile test moratorium in return for US food aid.

The US had previously warned that any launch would jeopardise food assistance, but the official's comments at a congressional hearing marked a tougher stance and made clear plans to deliver aid had already been scrapped.

When I read that JR had agreed to terms in order to get his people fed I was pleased. Now not so much. I think the US should continue efforts to get food to innocent starving people of that country. But no idea how to do it if the regime is only going to disperse it amongst their own ranks.

Sanctions do not hurt the protected class in a tyrannical dictatorship.Perhaps food is the one thing we shouldn't be sanctioning. It amounts to do what we say or we'll starve your poor.

I don't agree. There are men, women and children starving all over the world. We cannot feed them all. American taxpayers should not be paying to aid the people of those countries who oppose our interests. Send it to the myriad other places in the world whose governments are either our friends or USA-neutral.

If North Koreans get tired of starving...get tired of their government keeping food from their mouths...perhaps they will overthrow their own government.

in my opinion ,no people deserve dying of hunger ,and no politics should prevent anyone from helping them

I agree that they should try to force change. But I don't agree that the US should ignore people starving. If we are capable of helping we should be willing to do so. The poorest countries of the world can use the aid. I dont agree with giving aid to countries we owe money to (china for one) without it affecting our money owed.

I say way to go. We've played this game with them over and over. Do I want innocents to starve, no. But evidently N. Korea leaders care more about missile launches than their people.

Well the agreement was fun while it lasted. But I do suspect that NK will stop the missile launch and the US will take back the suspension.

We're not done playing the game.

We have our own poor. We have people dying right here due to not having medical care. We have people starving and going to food banks when they can actually get to one.
It's nice to be giving. But it's time to take care of our own now.

I totally agree with that. Its one thing to not give the food and its another thing to use sanctions to deny them the ability to buy food.

Are the people who are starving have a means to overthrow their government. I don't a tyrannical dictator giving those people weapons.

I think one of the main problems with figuring out how to deal with North Korea is the unique situation of its citizens. The certainly do not have enough to successfully overthrow the government. Moreover, the government is so, almost impressively, good at keeping them from getting information and keeping the rest of the world from knowing too much. Consequently, we can't rely on the probability of revolution nor can we really work to incite one. As a result, the moral problem of helping the citizens and enabling the government is a rough one.

You understand, of course, that any country only has so much money. Most of the world is pretty quick to jump on the bandwagon of giving away America's money to save the starving; not so much at giving away their own money.

When it comes to NK, my thoughts are this: Fool us once, shame on you, fool us 6 times and we're still trying to bargain with you, shame on us.

But if the gov does that we are told that is wrong by the right wingers because that is creating welfare dependent people.....

Giving food to NK is like giving booze to an alcoholic, you just enable them and in the long run make things worse. NK has food it just all goes to the ruling class and the military.

Well we and a bunch of other states have sanctions against North Korea, and a lot of North Korea's land is not well suited first, but with little food the DPRK produces and little aid it receives from counties (like China mostly) most of the food goes to the military because of the Military First policy North Korea has.

You bring up a good point, NK is Chinas friend so let China feed them. If we give NK food we are merely letting China off the hook.

Tax dollars are meant for us in this country here. However, if you want to help and can do so safely you should
