Not generalizing all on Medicaid, just pointing out where I have my ethical conflicts.

Yeah those people really piss me off because it really is a great program. Disability has been wonder for me and now Im looking forward to going into vocational rehabilitation.

I wish you a swift and complete recovery.

Back to the topic, I'm shocked that so many are of the opinion that Cheney should just die because he's older and be denied a heart transplant (especially when we don't know the facts regarding his wait time or the match availability of the donor).

Most people don't realize all factors that go into a heart transplant.

Agreed. I think they see it as "rich old man get's heart transplant because of money. And the R next to his name means he should die anyway."

The ultimate form of partisanship is wishing death and illness upon those who disagree with you. I think it's one of the most disgusting and repulsive human behaviors.

Honestly - he shouldn't have accepted the transplant. He should have said 'no'. He's 71. How much longer will he live? What will he do with his future? He'll live, what - 15 more years, maybe? IF he makes it past the initial recovery period?

How many more elligible people - mothers, fathers, teachers - are on transplant lists who could live for 30, 40 or 50 more years and have much more of a possitive impact on teh world and society and their families lives than Cheney?
I can't believe your callous attitude on this. You may feel different when you are 71. Sheeesh!

the issue is not his age.

the issue, is his general health, and how long this new heart will help him.

I'd rather this heart go to someone that can extend life 10..or 15...or 35 years.

if this heart could have instead gone to someone like that, rather than a guy who's life might be extended a mere 5 years, then I believe a mistake was made.

Cheney can live to be 81 or 86, that would meet your 10-15 years.

Cheney has the right to be put on a transplant list. Those lists do account for age and lifestyle (drinkers and smokers going to the back of the line). I think it's unethical to say that "after age X if you need an organ transplant you should just die."

Someone I loved very much died last year at about this time at the ripe old age of 92, and up until the last few months, he was still active, by which I mean repairing fences and so on. His first pacemaker was implanted in the '60's. If this wonderful old man had been denied a heart transplant, this would have possibly denied him many happy, healthy years of life.

Decisions on eligibility for a tranplant or anything else should be made on a case-by-case basis. I don't think that 71 should be a death sentence.

I wouldn't trust that. In our country the only way CBS would know is if Cheney himself released his medical records and said he is only going to get about 5 years on it. They can speculate, but it would be illegal for them to obtain his health information and make a prognosis.
