Klansman Running for Idaho Sheriff

I do not see him getting elected.People will only focus on the fact he is a racist, but not just any kind of racist but a member of a anti-American former terrorist organization. How can anyone in their right mind think this man can actually carry out his duties as sheriff without any bias or prejudice?

Because, good James, he is "a concerned citizen." That implies that everything will be alright!

This man actually is a racist. This isn't some msnbc race card BS.

Was someone like Robert Carlyle Byrd (Congressman) a racist?
It is overplaying the race card.

Depends. Are we going by time period? How minorities viewed his life and death? What entirety of values he held throughout his life? Or the ones he had at death?

Can we simply accept at face value that this guy is a member of the KKK?

So was Byrd, but he admitted he was wrong.

Byrd also said, in 2005, "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened.

I'll accept this guy when he admits he was wrong. He hasn't yet.

How many non-racists you know that join racists organizations?

"He once had a fleeting association with the Ku Klux Klan, what does that mean? I'll tell you what it means. He was a country boy from the hills and hollows from West Virginia. He was trying to get elected," former President Bill Clinton said of Sen. Robert Byrd.

"And maybe he did something he shouldn't have done come and he spent the rest of his life making it up. And that's what a good person does. There are no perfect people. There are certainly no perfect politicians," he added.

Robert Byrd held the titles Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops in the Ku Klux Klan.

In the early 1940s, Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.

Each local chapter, or Klavern, is led by an Exalted Cyclops.

He presides over the Council of the Centaurs.

Writes quarterly reports to the Grand Giant.

In the Klan hierarchy, the Exalted Cyclops reports to:

A Grand Giant, or provincial leader;

A Grand Dragon, or state director;

And the Grand Wizard, or national chair.

Below the Cyclops were:

The Grand Magi,

The Grand Monk,

The Grand Exchequer,

The Grand Turk,

The Exalted Cyclops' responsibilities include presiding over Klavern meetings, initiating new members, and appointing Councils of Centaurs--that's Klan-speak for a jury--to try and punish wayward Ghouls.

In 1944, Byrd wrote to segregationist Mississippi Senator Theodore Bilbo:

"I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

-- Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944,

In 1946 or 1947 Byrd wrote a letter to a Grand Wizard stating,"The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the nation."

Byrd joined with other Southern and border-state Democrats personally filibustering the bill for to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964,14 hours, a move he later said he regretted. Despite an 83-day filibuster in the Senate, both parties in Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Act, and President Johnson signed the bill into law.

Membership totals are hard to track, because the Klan doesn't willingly release member lists. Over the long term, the KKK is clearly contracting, since its rolls have shrunk from millions in the 1920s to between 3,000 and 5,000 today.

(T)he Ku Klux Klan is losing chapters, according to data released on Wednesday by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The number of KKK chapters dropped from 221 to 152 in just one year.

Former KKK Grand Wizard Don Black in 1995 launched the website Stormfront, which enables individuals in the white supremacist movement to share ideas and read news stories reported from a racist perspective.

In August 2008 Black's 19-year-old son Derek was elected to one of 111 seats on the Palm Beach County, Fla., Republican committee, with 167 of 287 votes. The committee has refused to seat Black, citing a loyalty oath he failed to sign before registering his candidacy. The oath states candidates must refrain from activities "likely to injure the name of the Republican Party."

An estimated 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites died at the end of KKK ropes from 1882 to 1964.

Although it is relatively unreported today, historical documents are unequivocal that the Klan was established by Democrats and that the Klan played a prominent role in the Democratic Party," A 13-volume set of congressional investigations from 1872 conclusively and irrefutably documents that fact.

Blacks mostly voted Republican from after the Civil War and through the early part of the 20th century. That's not surprising when one considers that Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president, and the white, segregationist politicians who governed Southern states in those days were Democrats. The Democratic Party didn't welcome blacks then, and it wasn't until 1924 that blacks were even permitted to attend Democratic conventions in any official capacity. Most blacks lived in the South, where they were mostly prevented from voting at all.

***
I'm not a Republican but to those who say racists are welcome in the Republican Party, I haven't found the evidence of that. The KKK was started by the Democrat Party and evidence of that is abundant.

Wow, I never realized that Klansmen were so fond of D&D/Tolkien mythology.

and voters will decide if they want him as sheriff. Not saying he should be elected, just that he has a right to run for the position.

It is similar to asking should a person who belongs to a group that is against illegal immigration be allowed to run for sheriff? Yes, its up to the voters to decide if the person gets hired.

No, as he is a Klansman, I'm pretty sure that says everything one needs to know. I was joking with you about how he was trying to spin his image problem.

To see that evidence you haven't seen you need to read up on the Republican Southern Strategy and the great party switches that happened from Dem to Repub after the civil rights amendment was passed.

Then after you figure out that the Southern Strategy was racist and that the likes of Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond jumped the Dem ship to the GOP you can then ask the guy that this thread is about why he is vying for a Republican nomination... and then you can ask David Duke why he was running as a Republican.

Times change.

OR you could ask these two why they're running as democrats:

But it’s the video where he casually talks about “shooting” and starving black South Africans – and kidnapping the country’s president – that caught the attention of people who track white supremacists.

Hollar, who is running for the N.C. Senate from Catawba County, is one of two Democratic candidates whom state party officials have taken the unusual step of denouncing.

The other is Carrol Crawford, a former Ku Klux Klan leader once convicted of burning a cross in Charlotte. He’s running for Rowan County commissioner.

So the Democrats "disown" the racist candidates. Imagine that. lol

Bivins Hollar likes to post videos from his bedroom. About weight loss. About Pokemon cards. About selling chewing gum at a flea market.

:lamo

Fat guy preaching about weight loss from his bedroom... ok. You've made your "solid" point. lol

The other guy is a 77 year old man who is putting distance from that era in his life. Unlike Sir David Duke now and this guy the OP wrote about.

Contacted by the Observer, he didn’t acknowledge that he used to be in the Klan.

“I am associated with only one group and that is the America Legion,” he said. “Used to be is used to be. Hasn’t got a damn thing to do with today.”

*edit... btw:

David Duke used to be a Democrat who flipped to Republican as well.

"Disown"?? Doesn't that mean to repudiate any connection or identification with? Pretty hard to do when they're on the ballot with a big D beside their names. lol

Controversial Catawba Co. candidate says he's not running

Bivins Hollar, a Democratic candidate for the 42nd District of the N.C. Senate, said he's not racist, "And I'm very sorry this happened."

Hollar said he has no affiliation with any hate groups and said the video was a spoof of the KONY 2012 campaign. His mistake, Hollar said, was that he didn't put that in the title of the video.

Guess not... good luck in the future though. lol
