French minister: suspect says he'll surrender - The Denver Post
From the Australian Article:
"The suspect's mother was brought to the scene. She was asked to make contact with her son, to reason with him, but she did not want to, saying she had little influence on him," Gueant said.
"This person has made trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the past ... and says he belongs to al-Qa'ida and says he wanted to avenge Palestinian children and to attack the French army," he added.
The mother and brother of the suspect have been detained by police, along with the brother's girlfriend.
"He was in the DCRI's sights, as were others, after the first two attacks," an official said, referring to France's domestic intelligence service, adding: "Then the criminal investigation police brought in crucial evidence."
This guy was tracked for a while by the police but not closely (it seems). Was this terrorism? It seems so. So who are the terrorists? Just the self-proclaimed shooter who says he's part of Al Qaeda and who shoots multiple people and then goes after a Jewish school killing children? Is it also his family who does not help to talk to him and "talk him down"? This brings up a larger question: We tend to be very literal when talking about terrorists and identify only those who carry out the acts of violence in the name of ... whatever. In Al Qaeda it's sometimes revenge (as in this case), other times it's a political statement about the U.S., or Israel, or whatever.... what about all those who helped the self proclaimed terrorist?
I'm not saying this happened in this case but hypothetically speaking.... parents who raise their children in radical Islam, teach them from the beginning that martyrdom and taking the lives of as many Jews or whomever, is God will. Those who feed them, give them money, give them shelter, give them aid and otherwise allow them to carry out their final and violent acts.... are these supporting characters any less terrorists than those who made them bomb? Than those who pull the trigger? I say no and therefore we need to recalibrate how many actual terrorists there are in our minds.
“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.
