Santorum: English must be adopted by Puerto Rico

Yeah at least 0bama never mandated English in the 57 states !
Absolutely agree, a misspeak that occurred several years ago certainly excuses the ignorance of constitutional law by a candidate who claims himself as a strict constitutionalist. Why do so many find it difficult to call a spade a spade?

Its like someone sticks a quarter in this guy and he says something stupid lately.

Man, it seems like I have been wanting to adopt English forever, but I am still stuck on the effing waiting list.

We need to stick to the failure that is Obama administration policy, and stop with the social agenda stuff that liberals will pick apart and misrepresent.

Misrepresent!

Aside from the fact that he was wrong on the facts, it was a dumbass thing to say from a strategic perspective. It's going to cost him in PR, and if by some miracle he wins the nomination, it will cost him in Flrorida which is home to over a million Puerto Ricans.

but it might win him brownie points among the monolingual crowd who will equate Spanish with illegal aliens and come back with something about how real Americans speak English and only English, and expect the rest of the world to speak it too.

Yes misrepresent...It is a relatively easy term...I am sure you know it, liberals are masters at employing it....

I don't think that Santorum helps himself when he gaffs as with any politician, it really depends more on how much the liberal media makes of it....That is why gaffs by Obama, Biden, and demo's are rarely seen if only in fleeting spots, while republicans suffer peering investigative spots asking the burning question, why? what did he mean? etc....pfft....It really is an old playbook, and worn out.

Unfortunately for Santorum he can't unring that bell. The million plus Puerto Ricans in Florida aren't going to forget it. No one else really cares.

Might as well write off New York since their are more Puerto Ricans their than live on the island too!

Well, he wasn't going to win NY anyway, so....

Democratic Rep. Pedro Pierluisi, Puerto Rico's non-voting delegate to Congress, said today on CNN that Santorum has a "narrow and limiting view of what America is all about."

"English is the predominant language in the U.S. and will continue to be so, whether Puerto Rico becomes a state or not," he said. "In Puerto Rico, 90% of our parents want their children to become fluent in English. So it's a non-issue and shouldn't be factor in determining whether Puerto Rico can join the union or not."

Couldn't have said it any better. What's irritating about stances like Santorum's is their pointlessness. He appears rigid rather than principled on this issue...

If Bush did this then lib-tards and lib tard comedians would be giving Bush **** over it.

Santorum: English must be adopted by Puerto Rico

Uh oh, looks like Rick's making up laws. Unless I missed the part of the Constitution where it set forth speaking English as a requirement for statehood. English is the De facto language of the US and the only language Americans should be speaking is english.

(Cue the Rickbots in 3,2,1...)

I agree with Santorum on this.If Puerto Rico wants to be a state then it's citizens should adopt english as its official language.

No one is asking that they speak like a grammar fag/nazi, a anal retentive english teacher or a english language text book.Because real people don't talk like that.

And they would be silly to do so, My point is that I dislike when people dwell on misspeaks rather than what seems like a basic misunderstanding of federal laws and limitations.

Yeah, we should make threads about Obama mentioning his kids. That is a good substantive issue to go after him on....

It is not a requirement, which is what Santorum claimed. By the way, you should visit PR, great place and a large portion of the population there actually does speak english...

It's not the official language in any of the other states, why should Puerto Rico be a special case?

I don't think it's too much to ask people who specak English to do so relatively correctly. There are things I'm willing to let slide, but not knowing the difference between "then" and "than", or "your" and "you're" , or "to", "too" and "two" aren't among them.

Don't tell me, tell Santorum and Leroy Gingrich.

I honestly expected him to say: "if English was good enough for Jesus, then it's good enough for everyone else!"

No need to misrepresent. Direct quotes of right wing idiocy seem to work just fine. Keep it up with the Slut and Prostitute and the product of rape being a gift from God and forced vaginal ultrasounds and ....oh, what's the point.

Since the United States itself has not adopted English as its official language, why should we make Puerto Rico do it?

To be fair to Santorum and others that believe English should be the U.S. official language, lots and lots of other countries have official languages.

Yes, they do - and I don't have much of a problem with English being adopted as the official language of the United States. However, until it is it seems a little strange to want Puerto Rico to adopt it before they're allowed to become a state. Not that Puerto Rico will ever become a state. The Republicans will never allow it.
